I just bought a new 223 bolt action and im looking for a scope what do you guys think. Leupold VX-1 4-12X40 or Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14X40? Also would you suggest Warne or Leupold Base and rings?

I'd vote Dednutz, or Burris Signature Zee rings. The Zee rings don't mark your scope, and if you have to add some MOA, you can get offset rings.

Another vote for the Dednutz mount, and my Savage .223 wears a Mueller Eraticator 8.5-24x50 Varmint scope. Perhaps the best value in optics out there now.

I use Leupold/Redfield mounts and rings exclusively. They do everthing I want a scope mount system to do and look good doing it.

My 77 Mk II wears an old Leupold Vari-X Mk II 3x9.

I'm not knocking anybody else's choice of mounts, but I'm using the same sort of Weaver rings and bases as I've done for almost sixty years, now. They work just fine.

But Conetrols are prettier. :)

i think warne bases are the way to go out of the two mentioned. Dont get any of that quick release stuff though, i just wouldnt trust anything like that.

As far as the scope, if you want something that is a really nice scope at an affordable price get a Millet. I just bought a buck gold 6-25 x 56. Very accurate repeatability when run through the box(8 clicks up, 8 clicks left, 8 clicks down, 8 clicks right) $350 or so. They also have a 4-16 x 56 that may suit you better thats around $250-275. Honestly its just as well made as my VX-III in my opinion. You guys that have a ton of rifles should try these things.

I like the Nikon just a hair better than the VX1's, I'd go with a one piece base (weaver/picatinny style) and Burris Zee rings. I use that on my .243 varminter and it's a great setup.

Hey, Waldo!

Since you like Robert Service,

Strange things are done in the Midnight Sun by men who moil for gold. The arctic trails have their secret tales that will make your blood run cold. The Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see was the night on the marge of Lake LaBarge, where I cremated Sam Magee.

Great poem, if you haven't read it already.

And in related news, I'm also looking at buying a Farrel 20MOA mount. Glad to know it's a decent choice.

Memorized it thirty years ago, I perform that one regularly for the middle-schoolers. I was raised on Service and Kipling.

If I weren't lysdexic I'd try to learn the bagpipes - if only to annoy the neighbors. Of course, they're mostly Mexican immigrants (of mixed legal status) who love Tejano music. Tubas and accordions until 2 am.

Yep, I need a bagpipe!
