I aplogize if this has been discussed before. I searched the forum but couldn't find this specific question.

I'm new to the A4. I recently bought a RRA flat-top with removable front sight.

Any suggestions for scopes/mounts for this thing? I anticipate using it primarily for ~ 100-yard range work but wouldn't mind having it SHTF-ready. I'm open to alternatives to traditional optics.

I'd like to keep costs below $600 if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Leupold has a 1.5-5 power scope that is at your price point if you get the non bells 'n whistles version. http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-mark4-15-5x20mm-pr-rifle-scopes.html

The bells and whistles version (illuminated reticule, m2 turret knobs) is about 8-900. http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-mark4-15-5x20mm-mrt-m2-riflescope-56994.html

They also have a Mk2 1.5-4 power scope with just the duplex reticle at about $400.

I ordered some Leupold binos from this store over a year ago...good price and service, no issues.

You could pick up an inexpensive Tasco ProPoint at Wal-Mart ($40) to see if you like the concept of a red dot. If you do, and want to spend more money to get something water resistant, shock resistant, fiber optic backup, less parallax, etc. then you could get an Aimpoint; if you don't like the dot style sight, you're only out $40.

leopold makes a 2-7 x 33mm in its rifleman class $170 plus tax

Thats what i use and it lets you use 2 power for close work or higher power up to seven for distance and detail.
It is also more compact than a 4-9 and a couple ounces lighter.

A4 scope

I put a Sightron 3x9x42 on mine. It shoots 1." at 100 yds and never loses zero. They make an electronic scope for it also. 199.00@ Midway

Trijicon 1.25-4x ...

Excellent glass quality. Very clear. Is illuminated, both day & night. Triangle is super bright in the sun which makes it nice and fast. Easy to pick up. The variable range is ideal for short range use. For targets past 50 yards, the 1.25x won't be a problem ..for past 100 or 150 on out you can dial it up to where you feel comforatable. Set your zero up for 300 yards and you're good to go.

The only thing this won't be good for is close quarters type stuff. The quarter magnification I find difficult to use. If you want to optimize 50 yards or less - stick with good old irons, or get a non-magnified optic like Aimpoint or EOtech.

Must check this scope out....

Saw a Burris 1-4 power "euro diamond" (horrible name) at a gun show the other day and I've never seen anything like it. It was the clearest thing I've ever seen, and I was able to look at some $2000 scopes that day... If you can find a gun shop with one, if it's the last thing you do; check one out (seriously, hold it up to anything else they have, it's amazing). They make one with a red dot or not...

Take a look at the Burris XTS 2x Speed Dot sight. But, keep in mind that for a little bit more, you can get an Aimpoint, which (IMHO) is an excellent scope for the 16 inch AR platform.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I appreciate your time.

I'll consider them each and post which way I end up going.

Thanks again.
