Can anybody help a buddy out??? I bought a Ruger #1 in 375 H&H for a future Moose/Grizzly/ hunt. It has iron sights, I think I may want to put a scope on it...any suggestions???, also its SS.
I'd appreciate any input...

1.5-5 Leupold in Leupold detachable mounts with a 3-9 Leupold, also in Leupold detachable mounts, both zeroed in. Bears kick ass, not a time to skimp. I have used both of these scopes in crappy conditions for years and never had a problem. Only one? go for the lower power one, make sure you have the detachable mounts, so you can whip off the scope in a few seconds, instead of fumbling for a coin to get the Rugers (which are excellent, but not for dangerous game) off. You might hunt for thirty years and never need this detachable option, but boy if you ever need it, you are really going to need it. Mick.

Thank you gentlmen for your replies...I was looking at the lower power Leupold, I think that may be my best choice in the VX3. any idea's on where to get the detachable rings for a Ruger???? any further leads would be appreciated.

Ruger

I had (wish still have) a Ruger No.1 in 458. I put a 2.5 Leupold with the standard bases, shot my bear at 5 paces. I agree with fourfingermick in theory, I'm not sure I would have the intelligence to remove the scope to use irons. My bear was not charging but I was on the ground and even at 8 paces and closing I had the field of view to find the shoulder. I will say the 458 put her down to stay. Practiced with it from 5 yards to 100 yards. Whatever you put on it put your time behind the stock, the 375 is not worth anything if you miss or a bad hit. My less than 2 cents worth. Thanks

thanks parolebear, I shoot alot...practice makes perfect!!! thanks for your input, it's worth more then 2 cents...
I'm still looking for quick detach scope rings. The gun show is coming...(much better then the circus coming to town!!) I'll make the rounds there, I hope to score on a new scope too.

Depends on anticipated distance

If you anticipate >30 yards, I would say red dot, and extend that to 100 yards for moose, bear, etc. If anticipating shots at 100 to 300 yards, I would seek out something like a 1 to 3 or 1.5 to 4.

I agree, quick detach bases/rings. I use quick detach Leupolds on my Mark V. They offer excellent return to zero.
