I am looking for a scope to put on my first Ruger M77 MkII RSI in .308 which has the polished blue finish (not matte like the Hawkeye).

I do not want the scope to over power the gun or take away from the looks.
However, I want to be able to have a good picture and shoot deer up to 200 yards.

I am considering the VX-2 in 2x7x33 or 6x26 FX-II.

What are your thoughts?

Would you mess the B&C Reticle or just Duplex?

One last word - I have several Matte Finish Leupold on guns that have polished steel and they look fine to me. I do not think I would like the Gloss Finish on this gun.

Thanks!

The 2-7x32mm VX-2 would be the better of those two. I'd do the 2.5-8X36 VX-3 on a short action like that. It would be mo beta!

^^^ I think that rifle is worth the VX3 2.5 x 8. (Of course, I am biased - I have the Vari-X III 2.5 x 8 on my .270, 7mm Rem Mag, and .300 Win Mag.)

Starting in January 2012 Leupold upgraded their entire lineup of scopes. Todays VX-2 is essentially a 2011 VX-3 as far as lense coatings and technology is concerned. They now have click adjustments as well. I paid $330 for a VX-2 last year with the long range dots. It is a much better scope than the $400 VX-3 I have that is 5 years old. Light years ahead of the older VX-III's or Varix-III's I also own. It is right with my Zeiss Conquest that sold for $550 when I bought it.

I consider todays' VX-2 about all the scope anyone really needs. You can pay more, but won't get much more until you get to the $1,000 level. I also paid $30 more for the dots. They work. I zero the crosshairs at 100 yards. The next dot is good to go at 200, the 3rd dot is right on at 300. I haven't tried it farther.

I like low end variables, but with more field of view, say 40' field of view at 100yds viruses 30' or 28' you have to see it to shoot it.

If you're shots will be 200 yds and under, a simple duplex reticle would be fine. I'd zero 2-inches high at 100 yds and hold dead on for all shots out to 200. (You'd be 2-inches low at 200, dead on at 150). At the ranges your're talking about, for deer sized game, there'd be no point in a multitude of "dots".

low power variables

I agree with Frogman; I have a 1.5-6x42 on my 300 Savage, and 1.75-5 x24 on my 8mm Mauser.
Those scopes offer all I will ever need out to 300 yards+ on game or targets.
Looking for another in the 1-4 range for my 7mm Mauser.
I use to have high power variables(4-16, 8-20), but sold them off years ago !

I have the same rifle and caliber and had the same prerequisites for a scope as you (actually, I hated having to put any scope on this little carbine in terms of diminishing its fine handling properties) do. I ended up putting a Leupold VariX II, 1X4x variable scope (with straight objective) on it and have been very happy with its optical quality and compact, lightweight configuration.

Have a look at the Nikon 1-4x20 Monarch African Riflescope (Matte, German #4 Reticle).

The Nikon Monarch riflescope family is performance competitive with the Leupold offerings.

3x9x32 Bushnell banner???

I'll probably get hammered for this, but I've had a Bushnell Banner 3x9x32 on my Ruger .308win since 1982, and I've only touched the thing but 2x in all those years. Not sure if they're made to the same specs these days, but they are a cheap alternative. All depends on what you want to do with your rig.

On my M70 Ultimate Shadow in .308 Win, I use a couple of different scopes (I have M1913 rails on my rifles, so switching optics is quick). I alternate between a Weaver 2.5 and a Trijicon 1-4. Both work extremely well for my needs. I have no problem maintaining 1" groups at 100 yards with these optics. I have higher powered scopes, but they would look odd, too large for the rifle. If I were looking to add yet another scope, I would look to a 1-6, 2-7 or 2.5-8. My needs were to have an optic that would work for boar at 20 yards, or whitetail deer between 200 to 300 yards. Edit to add, I use these same scopes on my Weatherby Mark V in .300 Win Mag.

I have the M77 carbine with high gloss finish, and am currently debating what scope to put on it, and cannot bring myself to put a flat finish scope on a highly blued finish gun. But there are few new scopes made today with gloss finish. Anybody else want polished scope on polished gun?

I like a straight tube on a full stock rifle. My new 77RSI .250Savage wears a Leupold VXIII 1.5-5x and I can find none I like better.

I like matte black scopes on all my rifles whether they're matte blued, polished blue or stainless steel.

My two Ruger No.1RSIs and one m77RSI wear 1x-4x 20mm scopes - duplex reticle. I've used them hunting - taken deer and hogs at distances of 30yds out to 225yds with no problems at all. I think the straight tube looks fantastic on the RSI style rifles, gives it a classic look.
