Scope for shooting goups

For a long time I've wanted a scope I could move from rifle to rifle for load development. I basically just need high magnification with good resolution. I just want to KNOW that I'm getting the best performance from the rest of the system (rifle, ammo, shooter). I'm thinking along the lines of a 36x leupold target scope. I see a couple on ebay at about $600.00 What are you guys using and why?
TIA
Larry

How far will you be testing?

Too much mag shows my caffeine intake LOL

I find 16X rather comfy for 100 yard stuff.
12X is doable. But older I get the more I seem to "need".
I guess I forgot that important bit of information lol. 100yds generally. I may one day stretch it to 300 just for curiosity sake.

Since this is going to be the scope you use until you get the scope you want, I would go with the SWFA 20x fixed. Even my blind eyes can see .22 caliber holes at 100 yards with a 20 power. Also $300.00 for them is not a bad price ether.

For about the same price as a alternative, keep an eye out for 8-32x56 Sightron with a fine crosshair and target dot. These are excellent scopes with lifetime warranty.
I'm also a big fan of Sightron. I bought them when they were first introduced to the market. Bought 4 of the Big Sky models to mount them on my 22lr rifles. They are the 4-16X44 and use them to 200 yards. Wish they still made the Big Sky.

Scope for shooting [groups] ... I could move from rifle to rifle for load development ... basically just need high magnification with good resolution

What are you guys using and why?
I did the same for years and used Quick Detach mount to move from rifle to rifle (22LRs/9mm PCCs/.223 ARs) for 50/100 yard groups. But as I got better at shooting smaller and smaller groups, limits of QD mount started to show on paper. Now I have dedicated scope for each rifle permanently torqued with blue Loctite to not introduce mount loosening deviations on group.

NOTE: If you are still intending to move scope from rifle to rifle, you want a scope with readily adjustable external "tactical" turrets that won't move/drift as you will be re-zeroing the crosshair for each rifle.

Burris FF II 6.5-20x50mm $219 with free shipping - https://www.sportsmans.com/hunting-...-50mm-rifle-scope-ballistic-mil-dot/p/1541193
  • E1 version with side parallax focus down to 50 yards, especially for 22LR
  • External turrets with good "click" that's not audible and bit vague
  • 1" tube
  • This was purchased due to many THR member recommendations for clarity and brightness of field of view all the way to edge of lens. Even with smaller 1" tube, field of view brightness under low light/dark shadows of 150' trees I shoot 100 yard groups at is good. No issue seeing 22LR holes even under dim dusk lighting after sunset. To my eyes, on par with slight dimness compared to Arken EP5.
  • Made in Philippines if you want non-China scope
  • Excellent lifetime warranty with not too many people reporting defects to warrant replacement

Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24x50mm with EBR-4 MOA $279 with free shipping - https://www.eurooptic.com/Vortex-Strike-Eagle-4-24x50-with-EBR-4-MRAD-Riflescope-SE-1628-Kit.aspx
  • Illuminated reticle
  • External turrets with barely audible "click"
  • 30mm tube
  • This was purchased after Crossfire II 6-24x50 which has nice and clear/bright field of view but has AO and internal turrets. Strike Eagle has 80 MOA elevation/windage adjustment which was desired as T/CR22 with built-in picatinny rail maxed out vertical adjustment of other scopes at 100 yards (22LR bullet drop is an issue. I ended up putting 20 MOA rail on 10/22 which addressed the vertical adjustment being maxed out). Clarity and brightness of field of view sharp all the way to edge of lens. Compared to Arken EP5 at 100 yards under dark shadows, 22LR holes were clearly visible with perhaps slight dimmer field of view (If I did not have EP5 to compare, I would not have noticed)
  • For me, seems to have a tighter eye box but since I am mostly bench shooting, this is not an issue
  • Made in China
  • Excellent lifetime warranty with members reporting good customer service experience

Athlon Argos BTR Gen II 10-40x56mm $399 with free shipping (5% off with THRFORUM code) - https://www.opticsplanet.com/athlon-optics-argos-btr-gen-ii-10-40x56mm-moa-rifle-scope.html
  • 56mm objective lens
  • Big external turrets with great audible "click"
  • 30mm tube
  • Got this for shooting groups out to 300 yards (There is possibility of shooting out to 600-800 yards on more distant BLM areas). There was some concern of blurriness beyond 32x power and turret issue but "Gen II" release fixed both. Clarity and brightness of field of view sharp all the way to edge of lens and comparison to Arken EP5, for my eyes Athlon has slight edge.
  • Made in China
  • Excellent lifetime warranty with other forum reported excellent customer service experience

I like fine cross hairs with target dots if the sole purpose is shooting groups. I have one of these Mueller 8-32x 44 target scopes also:

Glass is decent and the 1/8 ' clicks are detectable. My only complaint is that eye relief is pretty unforgiving at 32x, but that isn't a deal breaker for me when shooting from a bench. $279 at Midway.

They also have a 40x56 fixed power with fine x-hairs for a couple bucks more but I've never seen one of those.

The best bang for your buck on a great target scope is the Nightforce BR 12-42x56

If you keep an eye out you can get one used for $800-$1,000

To beat it you’ll have to spend another $1K and I’m not sure you’re really getting a $1k worth upgrade.

Spend less and you’re getting a whole lot less.

ETA- I wouldn’t get a fix power scope. There will be days when the mirage is bad and you’ll want to dial your magnification back to see the target more clearly

Something I’ll look into thank you @Nature Boy

Unfortunately Leupold dropped the fixed 12X. Back in the day that was the group testing/ varmint hunting scope my buds and I ran.

1 inch tube, decent looks ( not the earlier long tube version ). Aesthetics right for classic rigs.

Old Simmons "Whitetail Classic" from Midway. $100 on sale back in the day. Pretty clear glass for the price. I set it
up to swap around on ARs, shot this five shot 300 BLK group with it at 100 yards. Shot some bigger ones too of course.
Focuses down to 25 yards, so good for .22 LR as well. Pic is when it was on the Tactical Solutions .22 LR upper.
