scope help

[SSN Vet]

Can anyone help me identify a reasonalbly priced scope which will mount easily on a Marlin 30/30 for use at 100 to 200 yds?

Can one be had for $50 to $75? Or am I completely out to lunch?

I'm inclined to have the scope mounted so that I can still use the steel sights at close range and reduced visibility.

Want to use the rifle for dear hunting.

I've never owned a scoped rifle before.

Haven't shot one in 20 years and that was on a Ruger .22

See-through sights can be mounted, but they are very high. For an inexpensive scope, since Meade bought them (owners of Bushell too), look at the Tasco World Class, on sale locally around here for $39....in 3x9x40, a good buy for the price.....

You are out to lunch in my opinion. Few if any, ( I would say none) of the sub$100 scopes can be counted on to be worth having.

Look at either the 2.5x or 4x here for a good, tough, useful scope at a bit over a hundred bucks. Far better than spending $40 or $50 which in the end is money in the trash.

I own several Nikons, a couple of Bushnell 3200's, several Burris FFII's, 2 older Leupolds, 2 Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5's, and a Tasco World Class 3-9x50. All are mounted on rifles that get used quite a lot. The only scope failure I've had was a Leupold 2-7 on my 458 Win, and they repaired and returned it in 2 weeks. The only one I consider a mistake is the World Class, it just isn't quite up to the low light shooting I bought it for, for that you really need fully multi-coated lenses with decent glass. I was going to hunt pigs at night with it and should have gotten the equivelent FFII or 3200, but of course they were over $300.

The Bushnell Banners are mounted on a .308 Ruger 77 RSI and a KelTec SU16. The one on the Ruger was on it when I bought the gun 5-6 years ago, I was going to change it out for something "better", but every year it just keeps working. The glass isn't quite as good as the more expensive scopes and they are single coated instead of multi-coated, but they are quite usable. You can buy them for around $75 new, I think they are better than the World Class from Tasco but maybe that's just my eyes.

There is a lot of crap out there, Chinese brands for $29-39, and most of the scopes sold in blister packs just have unusable optics for me. A lot of the guys I shoot with think you can't hunt with anything less than Swarovski or Zeiss, but my cheap scopes, ranging from $75-$250 work fine.

go to a gun show, go find a 4 or 6 power fixed. Buy it used and cheap. If that doesnt work, go to wally world, and get the new simmons design. they along with burris ,redfield, and someone else, were bought by meade. they redesigned all the scopes for way tougher tube and adjustment construction, also better fields of view of clarity all the way to the sides. I'm not saying they are the best scopes, but Meade makes very good glass and telescopes, and they can sell cheaper than other places because of their massive output and buying power.

I've deer hunted for over 40 years. Missed a chance at a 14 point 28" outside spread buck because my scope fogged up. If you absolutely have to go cheap, get a fogproof/waterproof fixed 4x. I have a Bushnell Sportview that I used on my 870 slug gun for years that worked fine.

Forget the idea of see through mounts. They're still too close to the iron sights to use in poor light in the woods and they sit the scope too high for any type of accurate shooting. I wouldn't take them for free. IMO they're worse than useless. If your scope is decent, why would you use iron sights??

Get Butler Creek flip caps front and rear.

You've got 6 months to deer season. Save $10 a week and you'll have enough to buy something you can depend on.

In my opinion, can't be done in your price range. If you must go scoped, look for a used Leupold or Burris fixed 4X. Ought to be able to find one used for around $100.

But seriously consider a good peep sight. Lyman makes a good receiver sight for the Marlin 336. You could also get one of XS Sight Systems' ghost ring setups. You might be quite happy with adequate iron sights.

Oh, and I agree that you should avoid the see-through rings. They mount the scope too high for comfort. If you want to use the factory sights for backup, install a weaver-type rail and use quick detach rings. If the scope craps out on you, take it off.

You might want to check www.ebay.com for 4x scopes. You can find new or a very good used scope that might fit into your price range.

Don't forget to look on the THR classified ads. I just sold an old steel-tubed Weaver 4x that way.

I've heard a lot of good user reports about the Tasco World Class scopes. I picked one up used for about $30, and while I haven't shot it yet, I admit to being a bit disappointed in the clarity of the glass. It's not that it's bad; actually, it's pretty good, especially for $30, but I'd heard that these scopes were really fantastic. I guess my expectations were a little high.
