I dont know much about scopes, but recently fired a red dot on a friends AR 15 rifle its pretty cool! and I want to put one on my ruger mini 30. I WILL BE TARGET SHOOTING ONLY,at a outdoor range 25,50,100, 375 yards mostly 50 to 100 yds. are there any red dot scopes available to fit my needs, also the mount system on my ruger is weaver scope mounts.I dont like the tactical rail mount in front of the bolt action. thanks for any info, CHRIS:D

If your going to be shooting at long distance then forget the dots. You can buy 2x dot scopes and then a mutiplier of 3 to 6x but the dot will be to large for any reall target shooting. The ruger is also suspect at long range, good up close gun but long range ain't its thing. Weaver mounts on a ruger?? Is it a older gun ? I thought they call with a ruger proprietary mount? By a scope ,maybe a 2.5 to 10 or larger and if a dot is wanted you can always side mount one A.K.A. Jerry Miklic style off the scope on an angle for up close work. Gun is still suspect at long range.

If you've got a Weaver rail adapter for your Mini-30 then pretty much any red dot will work. My favorite cheap one is the Barska M16 Electro Sight, about $80 if you shop around.

But my favorite all around scope which sounds good for your shooting distances is the Millet 1x4 DMS scope (~$200). Its a true 1X so you can keep both eyes open for close fast work and if you turn on the illuminated reticle its basically a red dot. But if you zoom out to 4X you've got nice magnification for longer ranges, generally enough for the limits of the 7.62x39 round.

Using the proprietary Ruger rings, your mounting options are really limited, and you'd need 30mm rings for the Millet DMS. Does Ruger make these?
