Okay my buddy has his Christmas present from me, a Mosin Nagant M44 similar to the one in my collection but his was manufactured in 1946 instead of 44'.

After the usual cleaning & what not he shot about a box of ammo through it & was quite happy with it's grouping with the stock sights & bayonet extended, I do like that his is not counter bored like mine but he asked about a scope mount for it on a later date.

His thoughts are to keep the original straight bolt but he does want to be able to keep the ability of using the iron sights, kinda like a back up or maybe have them for shorter ranges but all the mounts that I've researched seem to either removing the rear sight all together or the mount is very close to the rear sight making much use possibly nill.

I also looked at the sniper mounts but don't see anything about having the scope offset to the barrel like you would have for a Bren.

Can anyone give me some suggestions for a future purchase for him?

Check out the Brass Stacker. I was looking at it earlier, so no real experience with it.

I have an M-44, and I tried to scope it. My recommendation is to keep it as it is. If he wants a scoped .30 bolt action, buy one that is optics ready. If he is on a budget, the Savage Axis is one if the best budget bolt action rifles on the market today. There are others, I'm partial to Savage.
