Hi,

I have a Mossberg 500 that might need to get a rifled barrel for some deer hunting. The receiver is already tapped. I see that the rifled barrels are sold both with and without a cantilevered scope mount.

Which is better -- just put a rail on the receiver, mount a scope and use the plain rifled barrel, or buy the rifled barrel that has the cantilevered mount already affixed?

Thanks--

I agree, get the barrel mounted scope. Not only will it retain its zero better, there won't be a scope in the way should you decide to use the shotgun for something else.

Boy, am I glad I asked that question. I'll go with y'all preference!

Thanks,

The cantilever barrel will probably be more accurate & hold zero better too.
The scope is attached directly to the barrel, instead of wobbling around on the receiver with the barrel attached to it by a loose joint.

I recently got a Mossberg 500 combo with the cantilevered barrel and the dual comb stock. The cantilevered scope mount is very nice, I can switch from deer to field configuration in under a minute and not have to worry about scope adjustment.

One thing is that the cantilever mount adds some height. It all works well with short rings and the taller comb Mossberg gave me. If you are using a standard stock, the cheekweld may be a bit weak though. You may want to find a used example to shoulder and see how you like it, or get something to bump the comb up.
