i just bought a remington 700 bdl with the open sights. this is my second rifle purchase and the first was a combo package so i have no experience pickin out rings/mounts etc. so can anyone suggest some mounts and rings that work for this rifle. i would like to see some pics if u can post them. suggestions on scopes will be good too. im thinking 3-9x40 will be good. the rifle is a .270.

I like Weaver-style mounts. They are simple and they work. Usually they cost less. I'd go with something more sturdy if I had a 300 Win Mag or bigger, but I only shoot a 308 and lower. The Weaver rings/bases will work fine on your 270.

For a scope, I'd like to assume that you want something nicer than a Bushnell Trophy, so I'd recommend at least their 3200 Elite line. My favorite 200 dollar scope is the Nikon Buckmaster, followed closely by the Burris Fullfield II.

Good luck.

For hunting? Deadnutz, or Leupold dual-dovetail will be fine. What is you optics budget? Without knowing that I would suggest: Bushell Elite 3200/4200, Nikon Monarch, Zeiss Conquest, or my most recent favorite mid-priced optic Kahles Helia CL.

:)

optics budget

my optics budget is about $300. i found a bushnell elite 4200 3-9x40 on amazon.com and overstock.com for about $240. also i was at academy and saw a nikkon buckmasters 4.5-14x 40 for $309. but i think the bushnell is a better scope, right? i like the burris too and it was on sale for $169 at academy. they also had some new redfield scopes a 3-9x40 for $160 or so and a 3-9x50 for $199

Absolutely, no question about it. Also look at the equally good (but no better IMO) Nikon Monarch (which is still within your budget).

:)

talley lightweights are good - rings integral to the base. for a 3-9x40 use their 'low' height (equivalent most manufacturers 'medium').

No. Bushnell wishes their glass was as good as Nikon's. I'd go with the Buckmaster all day over a Bushnell....but 240 vs. 309 dollars definitely makes the decision a bit harder. If its any consolation, I'm only basing my opinion on looking through both scopes at Gander Mountain. The Nikon just looked more crisp and clear. And I have a friend who has had a Buckmaster on a Ruger 270 for going on 12 years now. He loves it & I can see why. Maybe a Bushnell fan will chime in on this.

Are you sure that you looked through an Elite 4200 and not a 3200 instead. To me the glass in the Monarch is nearly the same as E-4200 glass, but noticeably better than the E-3200.

:)

i was thinking nikkon buckmaster = bushnell elite 3200 and nikkon monarch = bushnell elite 4200 so i figured the 4200 would be the best. within my budget.

I think you're right (by my eyes anyway), the only reason that you might like the Monarch better is for the additional range (I believe it is a 2.5-10x instead of a 3-9x), and the larger objective for slightly better light gathering (42mm vs. Bushnell's 40mm).

rings

so.....medium height rings will work with a 3-9x40? i will check out the monarch.

Yeah, I'm sure. I look through alot of glass. But, that being said, everyone's eyes are somewhat different. I'm not saying that scopes should come in prescription, but look through some glass before you slap down big money. I have been surprised by a few scopes on how bad or good I thought they looked compared to what others have said. For whatever reason, Leupold VX-III doesn't seem nearly as nice, to me, as a Zeiss Conquest. And the Buckmaster seems to be as good or better than the Monarch. I always look at 3-9x-40mm scopes if I can, just to compare apples to apples. Try before you buy.

thanks for the suggestion on the talley scope mounts. i like the way its all one piece.

I've mostly used Weaver stuff for many a decade. Good as any, although there's other stuff that's prettier.

I prefer two bases over the single-unit. Leaves a larger opening into the magazine of a bolt-action.

Yes they are, that is good advice, I always try to look at optics in person as glass is subjective and it is good to get a feel for the features (though I didn't do that on my last purchase a Kahles, but I have used one before).

I can agree with that statement 100%, Zeiss is a great buy IMO.

:)

let me know if there is a specific combo you would like to see, or angle or whatever...

thanks for the pics. what bases were on the burris set up ? just what i was looking for to get some kind of idea how they all looked when they are on the gun.
i have a few days to pic some stuff out, because i took my gun to academy so i could just get everything there. but the freaking dufus behind the counter broke a mount screw in my rifle :fire: then he says "i'm gonna quit while I'm ahead". I say "so your just gonna let me leave with that srew broke off in my rifle ?:uhoh: He says "yeah i guess ur just S.O.L. on that":what: I say "uhhh No" he gets the manager and now i have to wait on my gun to get back from the gunsmith:banghead: I figure I can do better buy my self. Well, with the help of u guys, of course:D

your range session

If i was at that range, I would be shooting from the truck blind:D

the burris set up has burris adapter bases on it. that is a ruger rifle, and those burris bases allow you to use a weaver-style ring and modify the position of the rings for ruger rifles. i generally avoid burris stuff, but in the case of this ruger i really didn't have a choice. burris is the only maker i am aware of that could accomplish what i was wanting to do. unfortunately, they did it w/ typical burris quality, meaning i ended up having to chase threads and replace one of the screws. however, it is done and working, now.

sooner or later you'll get tired of having other people do improper work on your guns and you'll just start doing quite a bit of the work yourself. most of us have been there, and having someone else make a mess out of your gun drives many folks to figure most things out on their own.
