Last of the questions I think I know the answer to, but have been told otherwise by others.

have a 45 Cal CVA Hawken. It has a pretty darned thick octagon barrel. I want to mount a scope base (dovetail type) on it. The base does have a flat bottom for the octagon barrel.

Question: Can I drill right thru the barrel and tap it for the base screws or do I need to drill and tap blind holes? I can actually see the logic either way. Drilling thru may lead to blowing the screws out, but if that is the case why doesn't the clean-out screw on the side blow out, or back pressure blow the percussion cap off?

Folks usually don't intend to drill into the bore when installing a scope mount.
But if it's done by accident then as you mentioned the consequences probably aren't so bad.
But it could cause burrs in the rifling and there's also the possibility of corrosion.
If someone were paying a gunsmith to professionally install a scope mount and he drilled through to the bore, then it would be considered a botched job.

arcticap pointed out the real problem. Blowing the screws out isn't really an issue; there are lots of ways of sealing the threads to prevent that. The real issue is the edges of the hole and the unprotected threads, either the ones in the hole or the ones on the screw. They'd be very difficult to get really clean and a great place for corrosion to begin as a result.

why not just glue in on there..I know a guy that used epoxy and that was like 4 to 5 years ago...It's still on the gun,,And I hear the JB Weld works great as well..
