What's the proper scope position on an AR? Should the eyepiece be behind the charging handle? I've noticed that it's a little cumbersome pulling the handle back when the scope eyepiece is above it or a little behind it. Or is it more a personal preference type thing? I've scrolled through a few AR pic threads and you see them mounted all different ways. Behind , even and in front of the charge handle. Any help? Here is a pic of how I have it currently mounted, is it too far back?

People that shoot "nose to charging handle" mount scopes further forward.

I personally would place it forward of the charging handle. When shooting prone with irons I find my nose rests on the charging handle. When we received the RCO's for our A4's we were simply told to mount it wherever we could get a comfortable eye-relief.
I would say a few inches forward and back make no impact on your accuracy compared to the importance of you maintaining a consistent cheek weld and positioning. If it extends past the charging handle, oh well, it's not like it's used that often.
If it is, I suggest using a technique used with immediate action to rectify jams with the weapon still in the shoulder. Rather than hooking a finger on either side of the handle, curl the left hand into a loose fist and allow the knuckle of your index finger to catch on the handle release, and pull fully to the rear keeping the hand on the left side of the weapon the entire time. It takes some muscle control and practice, but in the long run I find it much simpler and faster than the normal two fingered grip.

You're going to need some form of forward mount.
The gold standard is the LaRue SPR mount. CAA makes a cheaper model:

I use the YHM extended rail pictured. It works well with some simple 30mm rings.
grassman, it looks way too far back and way too high. unless you're a horse, i don't think you're going to get a decent cheek weld like that.
if you loosen the rings and just push the scope forward til it stops then back up just a hair, it would probably be decent in terms of eye relief, but still too high.
when you're mounting your scope you need to take into account several things:
1. a way to consistently put your eye in the same spot every time (e.g. nose to CH)
2. the eye relief at minimum magnification
3. the eye relief at maximum magnification
4. make sure you haven't done anything to impede operation of the charging handle
5. leave room for BUIS
etc
