I picked up an M&P15ORC this weekend that has a ClearPoint 4-16x40 scope on it currently. I have a couple of questions about scope mounts for AR's (this is my first AR). With the ClearPoint installed on the rail it's a bit difficult to pull back the charging handle. What is the best solution for this (aside from buying a $500+ scope with a $500+ mount for it)? Can anyone point me in the direction of relatively inexpensive raised rings (or even better, a QD mount) that would get the scope a little further up off of the charging handle? Or is there such a beast as an extended charging handle available?

Also, I alway see people talking about back up iron sights, which makes good sense to me, but I haven't quite grasped how you would be able to use these if you have a scope attached (unless, of course, you scope was attached with a QD mount).

Thanks in advance and I warn you that I will probably be asking MANY more questions in the future. :)

Look into some scope riser blocks, I have seen them in 3/8 and 1/2", they will raise the scope to a much better level and are under $20 each.
This will help with the charging handle but changing out to a BCM Gunfighter or Badger tach lever will pretty much fix it.
I think you will find the consensous going to the BCM GF complete lever.

How is the scope mounted on the rifle now? Does the cheek weld feel comfortable to you or does the scope seem to be too low? If the cheek weld is comfortable, I'd just get a BCM Gunfighter charging handle. I ran one on my precision rig that had a rather large scope on it.

If you find that you have to have your head farther back on the stock than is comfortable, you may need some sort of cantilever rig to get the scope a little farther forward. If you could snap a pic of the setup, I'm sure that you'll get all sorts of advise.

Flat-top AR's need a tall mount for proper cheek weld anyway. The usual mounting as low as possible just doesn't work. I used this relatively inexpensive ($36) extended riser from YHM and still needed high rings.

Most guys run taller rings or a riser. But in addition we also put tactical charging handles on the rifle. They have bigger "ears" sticking out to grab. They cost about $14.00 on up.

Run higher rings, and go to Bravocompanyusa.com and buy a BCM Gunfighter charging handle; you'll never regret it. Go with the medium, you won't need the large.

Wow, the consensus definitely seems to be risers/tall rings and the BCM handle. My wife is NOT going to like you guys. :)

I'll post pics of how it's currently set up later today as I don't have my AR with me currently (the boss kind of frowns on assault rifles in the office, although I'm fairly certain shotguns are ok. :) )

A smart man buys the wife an AR too!! I gave mine a custom 17" 6X45 AR so she would not have to sling my 11 pound race gun around!!

I cheated a bit. I met mine at an IPSC match so she was already into shooting. It was only a small step to get her into the AR's. She still doesn't like shooting 308 bolt guns but she does like my 700 Varmint in 223.

She runs a Para 9X21 race gun and a tricked out 1100 in IPSC but she really likes the 6X45. I think the only thing she likes better is the 22 conversion top end on my M16. :what:
