Scope My Bushy...

Thanks Zak. :) I had a little Brownells Aluma Hyde II left over from another project. A quick mask job(a little to quick actually, but its very functional :) ) and it was a nice OD color. That scope has been on and off a half dozen guns, but I think its finally found a home now. :)

Here's how I scoped my Bushmaster V-MATCH:

B-SQUARE mount all the way forward.
Weaver low matte rings (since switched to Kwik-Site)
NIKON 6.5-20x44 A/O Nikoplex

With the last spot on the mount left open, I filled it with the B-SQUARE Bubble Level.
I like this setup.

Mr. Chitlin: Does that Rock River mount hold its zero well when you are taking it on and off the rail to switch it back and forth with a removable carry handle or something else? I also notice that its only availabe in 1", and as a newbie, I've got to ask: is that a good, common size for which its not going to be hard to find a decent scope in any given price range?

I'm new to optics, but tentatively planning my first cyote hunt at the end of March. So I'm going to scope my Bushy 20" HBAR A3 and use that.

TT,

I can not answer that question about rezeroing, because I have never taken it off to change optics. Wish I could help more on that question, but can't. I have several scoped AR's but don't take any scopes off and reinstall.

As for the question about the 1" mount, that is by far the most popular size scope tube. Some of the older ones were 3/4 inch and 7/8 inch, but the 1 inch is the most popular. You can also now get 30mm acopes, which are a little larger than the 1", but I would bet that any maker that makes 30mm also makes the 1".

Hope this helps a little.

Save another hundred and go for the ZEISS conquest 3-9x40 scope, runs around 400 dollars from riflescopes.com

Zeiss is tempting and much to be desired from what I hear. I think I'm gonna have to go for the Burris though. I used to have a Burris and have confidence in them. It was real bright and never lost a zero on me. The one I looked at the other day seemed even brighter than I remember the old one to be. Guarenteed for life too. Thanks for the link though! I found the Burris I want there for 50 bucks cheaper AND comes with a spotting scope thrown in. Sweet.

I'm leaning towards the Quantico one pc mount with built in rings, it looks real solid and within budget. Just have to hope for the best on the eye relief thing and see how far forward it'll sit. It'll probably be fine.

Now if the check would just get here.
:p

Nope. It's not on backwards.

It's a low-magnification scope, probably in the 1.5-5x power range. They offer a generous eye relief, and good field of view at low power, for rapid target acquisition on hard-kicking rifles. Most scope makers have one in their lineup, that one looks like a Leupold. You see them on big-game rifles, too.

Ok, thanks Mr. Chitlin. I might give it a try anyway... it looks like it uses the exact same thumb screw attachment as the removeable carry handle, and my irons go back to zero just fine when being taken on and off.

Yes, I mounted the scope backwards.

The observant will notice it's the exact same scope AK103K posted on his Armalite, minus the paint job: a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5X.

Edward,

When you get your Burris and spotting scope, PLEASE shoot me an IM and let me know how you like them (both). I'm stuck on the same scope, but haven't made up my mind yet on the illuminated or non-illuminated model. The illum. one is not only $100 more, but it also doesn't come with the free spotting scope. I want to find out just how much more the illuminated one REALLY is, if you know what I mean. I could always use a good spotting scope, but I just know that 1 or 2 times a YEAR that I get to go predator or varmint hunting, I'll wish I'd bought the illuminated one. The other 99% of the time, I won't be using the illumination at all, but I'd be using that spotting scope if it was any good.

Thanks for the post!

My scope came a couple days ago, my mount is supposed to be in some time today, according to UPS. I'l go up this weekend weather/work permitting and check it out. The spotting scope seems well made and very clear also. My impressions are that it was a good deal. I'll post back after the range trip.

BTW, Ed, besides come shooting it sometime, I still have a hundred .308 cal 178 gr gas-checked casts bullets still stashed away for your personal perusal. Been at least a year. You ever gonna come & get 'em?

Labgrade, I can't PM you and don't have your E-Mail addy either. PM me so's I can contact you about coming up, okay?

I wound up getting the Quantico one pc mount with the extended front ring and a Burris Fullfield II BallisticPlex (3-9X40).

I got it mounted up and managed to get it mounted as far forward as it would let me, the rear lens is just above the charging handle. If I do a tip o the nose to the charging handle mount, I'm lacking just a little eye relief and need to pull back about 1/2". It'll probably be ok with some practice.

Question. The quantico rings don't cinch down flush around the scope, is this to be expected? It gaps about 1/16", I got it tightened down even & level, but wondered about it gapping.

Thought I forgot eh? No, just didn't get to go shooting for awhile, 3 months?:(

Anyhoo, I finally got to shoot it last weekend. Ran a couple three hundred rounds through it and must say I'm very satisfied. I was too busy shooting groups to remember to remove & replace the handle to check repeat zero but I did change power settings on it after dialing it in to see if it still had the same POI, it seemed to but is not carved in stone yet. I need to shoot it more to be sure.

The Burris scope is very bright and easy to use, no suprises there. Only shot up to 100 yds so didn't really get to check the tic marks on reticle for longer range. Which is just as well I suppose cause I couldn't get real steady, prolly too much caffiene...

The mount stayed rock solid and gave no indication of walking, time will tell more. The free spotting scope that came with it is ok but kinda on the small size for my tastes, I find that my bigger and cheaper Simmons model is easier to use albeit not as bright.

I was shooting 10 shot groups and getting around 4" groups. Seems like there was always a flyer or three to open it up. Quite a few bullseyes but then the flyers. If no flyers, I'd have closer to 2" groups, nice & centered. No coffee this weekend.

I shot mostly 55g reloads and about 80 rnds of some 62g ss109's, also reloads, expecting them to do better than the 55's but it just didn't happen. They shot as good as the 55's but not noticeably better. Some different powder may be in order there...Will try & get back up again this weekend...

So far so good. I'd go ahead and get the Burris scope & Quantico Armalite mount, Onslaught. Seriously doubt that you'd be disappointed. I'm very pleased with them both. The spotting scope would be useful for the field maybe, being very compact.

More as it develops...
