I have a PTR-91. I recently got a B-squared clamp on scope mount for it. I like the mount as it sits just high enough that I can see the irons. Anyway, I mounted a Simmons 1.5-5X scope on it to test it out. I shot it some today and I like the mount and am encouraged by the accuracy. I was in a bit of a hurry since it was getting dark, but I shot a little over a 2" group anyway. I think I can do better if I take my time and relax more next time.

The problem is that rifle kicks pretty good. If I don't take care to keep a good hold against my shoulder, that scope will pop me in the safety glasses. I need a decent scope with good eye relief. I want it to be useful out to 300 yards at least, but I think most of my shooting will be at 100 or 200 yards. I need suggestions on a good scope. I might use a basic 3-9X scope if I knew the eye relief was decent especially since the iron sights can be used. I know Leupold and others make fairly inexpensive models. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Also for those HK91 experts: Does anyone make a buttstock with a longer length of pull than standard? I can handle the recoil fine, but I think the length of pull is a bit short for me and that puts my eye a little closer to the receiver. A pad might work I guess.

I have a Burris Signature Select 4-14x 44mm on my PTR-91. It sits up high on a Tapco claw mount with STANAG-to-picatinny rail adapter and Burris Zee rings. I still get a good cheek weld, though, because I'm using a Cherokee cheekpiece: http://www.cheekpieces.com/hk-cetme.html . I really like it. It just snaps on, and can be removed just as easily. You will need to put a real G3 buttstock on to use it, though, as the JLD standard stocks don't come with pin holes, and the Cherokee cheekpiece uses the pin holes as mounting points.

To increase the length of pull, there are two options I know of. The best option is to use a real G3 stock and swap out the standard G3 pad for one from an HK33 machine gun. That will add about 3/4" of pull length, some nice padding, and will look really cool. Good luck finding one, though.

The easier and cheaper option is a stock extender or recoil pad from E&L Manufacturing. I like the slip on recoil pad, which can add up to 1/2" of pull: http://www.elmfg.com/recoil.htm . E&L also makes an adjustable stock extension that will add 1/2" to 1-1/2" to a G3 stock: http://www.elmfg.com/recoil.htm . Like the Cherokee cheekpiece, though, it won't work with the standard JLD buttstock because the JLD stock lacks the pin holes and has a glued-on butt. So plan on picking up a surplus G3 furniture set. Be sure to stay 922(r) compliant, of course.... :barf:

Good luck!

A good option for HK91/PTR rifles seems to be the Hensoldt FERO Z24 scope with STANAG mount that dansammo stocks. Since you already have a mount you're happy with I don't know if this will help. However, for others with a similar rifle it seems like a viable option.

As it happens, I bought my PTR in a FTF buy. The previous owner threw in some ammo, mags, and an HK furniture set. He had painted the PTR stock with an urban camo job that is kind of cool so I left the PTR furniture on. I have the buttstock with the holes.

I like that stock extender. I think I'll go ahead and get that. I don't feel the need for a pad since the recoil doesn't hurt it just tends to kick the gun back if I am not careful in my grip and hold. 1/2" to 1" ought to be plenty. I was also firing an AK74 Tantal clone with folding stock for the first time. The short length of pull was more pronounced with that gun. The reoil is non-existent though.

The Burris scope looks good. I also saw some Leupold scopes on Academy's web page that probably fit the bill. I can't spend $300 right now, but it gives me a goal for January or February. I'll have to see how many fancy options I can afford. :)

Thanks for the suggestions and help. :)

I had the stock extender from E&L and decided I didn't need it. If you give me a couple of days, I'll see if I can find it and you're welcome to it. The slip-on pad added 1/2" and that was plenty for me. I'd prefer an HK33 pad, but haven't found one for sale, yet.

Also, if you're using a PTR furniture set, make sure your butt plate is removable. Real G3 butts are held on my metal spring clips, and pry off easily. My PTR came with a glued-on butt, and removing it destroyed it.

I forgot to mention one thing about my scope. It has the lighted "ballistic plex" reticle, which I really like.

Other than the holes, is there any other way to tell if it is an HK butt stock? I don't see any markings and it doesn't look like the butt pad is mechanically attached thought it might just be the paint job.

On the scope, a lighted reticle is one option I would like to consider. That is one reason I like the red dot I have on another rifle. It is useful in any conditions as long as you can see your target. I definitely don't want to go cheap on the scope for this rifle. I have a used Leupold on my K31 and it is rock solid. Down the road I would like to play with night vision, but not right now.

I won't buy the stock extender right away. Their on-line ordering is down so I'll call later this week. PM me if you want to sell yours.

Mine's not for sale, but you can have it if I can find it. I moved from Tennessee to Minnesota in June, and I still have lots of stuff in boxes. I'll poke around tonight and see if I can find it.

Okay, don't put yourself to too much trouble. $30 won't break my budget by any means. The AK74 clone I just bought might, but not that. :) You might find someone else in the future who needs it more.
