Honest use Vs. abuse.
If it's honest use, I've got absolutely no problem with it. If it's abuse, there's a deeper problem.
I took a class past spring with my carry gun (is there any other way?), a very worn 1911. So worn, it actually got comments from the instructors who carry a handgun on a daily basis themselves. I have no intention of refinishing it. It's since been retired to range status, I have a custom built pistol in hand now. I'll likely never refinish this $2,000 pistol either. It's gonna be honest use.
Heirlooms are a different matter, but shouldn't be "used" anyway. Take them carefully to the range and back home. If it doesn't warrant that care, it's not an heirloom, just use it.
I have both my Grandfather's shotgun and my Great Grandfather's shotgun. They are heirlooms. G.G.'s can't be used anyway, it's a damascus.
