Can anyone here who uses one of these tell me how to set the trim length?

Instruction say to use the tail of the cailper but I haven't been able to get that to work. I thought about setting it using a trimmed case?

Thanks

The tail of the caliper is dropped in from the top of the case trimmer to get a depth. It was more of a trial and error type method for me. I used the trimmer set from the factory and then measured the case. It came in a tad bit too short. I needed about .002 less taken off the case. I measured the trimmer and then subtracted .002 from what the caliper read and moved the cutting head until it hit the tail of the caliper. Voila! Trimmer set the to the correct depth.

Thanks,

I just got one with the drill chuck adaptor...you guys happy with it? How accurate/consistent?

I presume you are trimming bottleneck cases....

After setting my PH trimmer and testing the set trim length on a few FL sized cases, I ran a lot of some 4-500 thru the trimmer. Using the drill adapter in a variable speed drill set on low rpm, it didn't take too long. I randomly checked a number of the cases after trimming and found there were some variations although all were less than .01 inch.

Since the PH unit works off the shoulder datum, you must FL size your cases prior to trimming. It will trim each case to a uniform distance based on the shoulder (a:b). If your FL die does not fully bump/reset the shoulder back to the original specifications as measured from the rear of the case (b:c), the total length of the case (a:b)+(b:c) could vary slightly. From what I understand, this is not a problem with a lathe type trimmer, as they all work off the total case length (a:c).

Personally, I am more concerned with having the proper distance from the shoulder to the case mouth than I am of having a few thousandths possible variance in total cartridge length. I would think that the makers of the Gracey trimmer, the most expensive unit on the market and touted as the best available, would agree as their unit also trims based on the shoulder datum.

Hope this helps. Jim

I hear the Giraud does it all too...expensive but good! I don't process enought brass to justify the more expensive electric trimmers and the PH looked like an excellent alternative to speed things up a bit. I have previously been using a L.E. Wilson. Very accurate but not the fastest thing around!

I always adjust my resizing die using a Wilson case gage before I trim.

Thanks
