Just ordered some "sealed" ammo.

After I already ordered it, I wondered if it was gonna gum up my bolt or barrel. I'm not against cleaning after dirty ammo, but I wondered if it was something I should avoid all together or if I'll need some sort of special cleaner.

Also, is there something I can use to "unseal" these before I load them up? Clean that stuff off? Thats safe for the cartridge? Nail polish remover maybe?

I've shot several thousand rounds of sealed mil surplus and never had any problems. You might see a few scraps of sealant in the action but I doubt it will cause any problems.

In an effort to improve accuracy, some guys will take sealed ammo like that, place it in a reloading press, and use a bullet seating die to crack the seal. Not enough to move the bullet a significant amount.

The thought being it results in a more consistent bullet-pull. Depending on the sealant, and it's age, it's done as much by “ear” as it is by feel. I'm not saying you should do it, just saying it is an accepted practice in some circles.

Would a quick circle around it with an exacto accomplish the same? Maybe give it a turn with a crefully placed and padded set of pliers? I don't have the right reload stuff to pull them.

^^^ Advice:

1: Shoot the stuff.

2: Worry about something else.

Unless you are shooting a match rifle and are a highly rated competitor it's unlikely that you can improve it by doing anything to it, and in that case you'll be shooting match ammo anyhow.

This is how all military ammo is constructed. Sometimes it's more obvious, sometimes it's less obvious. It's all good.

actually, i think that seal is unusual though in that it is on the outside. i think most sealed ammo is between the neck and the bullet. no idea why they did it that way.

but that wouldn't stop me from shooting it

I don't think that would do anything. Pliers would do more harm than good.

There is no "pull". It's a push. A tiny amount. Like a 32nd of an inch. Maybe less. Any number of dies could be used. It's not necessary for it to be cartridge specific. Heck, a standard 7/8”x14 threaded bolt would work.

It may not a help with accuracy. But it might. You wont know unless you try. It's any easy experiment, in any case. I noticed from your original post you were shooting from a bolt gun. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't of mentioned it.

If you're spraying with a bullet-hose it's not worth the effort.

Looks like 223. Who made it and where did you buy it?

Got it from here...

http://www.buyammodirect.com/product/5-56-62gr-fmj-ss109-penetrator-sealed-brass-case-sadu/

This high-performance, precision-manufactured, penetrator ammunition is loaded to SS109 (NATO) specs and is perfect for your 5.56-chambered AR-15. Each cartridge is brass-cased, boxer-primed and re-loadable. The same ammo has been manufactured and sold to the U.S. and foreign Governments for use in combat operations in Iraq/ Afghanistan. These rounds are not cheap range fodder. Rather, they are battle rounds that are moisture sealed to military specifications for 20-year long term storage. The ammunition is made in Romania, by Uzina Mecanică Sadu, which is an ISO 9001:2008 (Certificate 154 C) and AQAP 2110 certified manufacturing facility. They have been manufacturing high quality ammunition for 75 years.

Great resource.

From the description it looks like good stuff at a great price. I wouldn't concern myself with the sealant. I consider that a plus. Shoot the heck out of it my man!
