i am building a allan underhammer action rifle with a fast twist .45 barrel and plan on shooting 500-500 gr bullets with heavy powder charges. i am wondering does anybody make a sealed ignition like the Mag Spark that will use rifle primers and not 209 primers. i am inspired by Ned Roberts book Caplock Muzzleloading Rifle.

Yes, me.
Search Blackpowder Shooting for "Howdah Hats & Primer Capsules".
Also, see "Ruger Old Army Club" starting on page 37.

Kindest Regards,
Doak

I once saw a huge bench gun with a sealed ignition. A brass screw cap with a copper top screwed over the capped nipple and sealed the gases from the nipple from escaping. The hammer had a flat striking surface and the copper top had enough give to permit the capped nipple within to be struck and ignited. The whole cap was only perhaps 3/8 in diameter and a few millimeters deep It was thirty years ago and I don't remember much more than that it looked so odd.

If you couldn't find the original with rifle primers, you could always use the 209 conversions that use rifle primers with the 209.

Just a thought... :D

Aloha..

I have one for my underhammer, I plan on making a new one to my liking, I will sell it to you if I can find it. I'm in Germany at the moment and moving as soon as I get back so it may be lost. PM me if you are interested.
