Living in Oregon, it's rather difficult to find a dry day to go shooting between October and July. :uhoh: In my many hours of searching, I've read about sealing the caps with wax. How exactly does one do this? (on a Remington) Do the caps still go off fine if they have a layer of wax over them?

I also think I read something about rubber covers that go over the nipples. Is there such a thing...and if so where can I buy them?

I don't think the caps need a layer of wax over them, just enough wax in the right place to seal the edges of the cap where it meets the nipple, in order to fill in the seam.
I haven't heard about rubber covers, but I've heard about cutting off a short section of aquarium hose and placing the small ring of it around the outside of a percussion nipple to seal the seam.

I use a thin nail polish to seal my nipples. I just touch the brush to the edge of the cap and it will wick up right around the edge.

Chawbaccer!

Thanks! I am SURE that this will beat the melted beeswax q tip applicator I've been using for years! Its one of those things that make ya think"Whoda thunk it!" Ya'll just got some good Karma points!

If someone is lookin to go shooting in wet weather what would be the sense of wanting to seal the caps? It would be a waste of time since the person wants to be shooting. Sealing tha caps is fer "carry" and not "shooting". Toilet bowl sealing wax is sticky and pliable and seals better than anything else I know of. You know for "carry" or "hunting". If the problem is shooting in the rain then shooting under a roof at a range is the trick. If out in the field then using a flap holster fer the revolver and inside pockets for the possibles and a wide brimed wester hat to load under helps. Even with a rifle the hat can be used to bend over a little and reload and seal the cap with a percussion cap tin full of toilet bowl sealing wax. Making circles of wax paper, like cough drop papers, to stick on the muzzle keeps rain out of the rifle with the cap edge swiped with the sticky wax.

Learn something new everyday. The nailpolish sounds like a great idea....

Sometimes the first shot is the only shot I get at a deer, so you can imagine that I take extra care for loading for it. If I'm going target shooting, I don't bother in the rain unless I use a covered bench. I've use bee's wax, but I think the nail polish is a bit less messy. A little bottle last for a long time, and you can get the off shades on sale in discount stores. I also use it for sealing bullets and primer on centerfire cartridges.
