I've got a chance at an old (*OLD*) Sears Ranger 4x rifle scope. Has anyone got anything to say about these? It's built somewhat like a Unertl (which I covet desperately, but not so desperate as to pay the price they fetch) and I like that. I've got a 98k laying around, and have wanted to put an older scope on it (anything is better than that crud-tacular bushnell sportview I pulled off.... am I allowed to say ap-cray here? 'cause it really was....) I put an old weaver K-4 I found at a local thrift store on the mauser, and I radically improved my grouping. I went from a two foot group at 100 yards off a bench to approximately a four to eight inch group offhand not trying really hard at about 75 yards (dead center with no adjustment on the K-4) unfortunately after my fifth shot the rear lens on the weaver started forming a crescent shaped crack along the edge. That really chogged the major log, I haven't shot the Mauser since.

I know the ranger is old, only has a 3/4 inch tube, and is made of brass... it likely won't collect light like a more modern scope. Does anyone have any experience with these? any words of wisdom? is it decent? is it uber-bad? (again.. dunno if i can get to the point and ask if it's ap-cray... a doggie land mine.. a road apple orchard...)

Anyway, hope to hear something soon..
