On tonight's news (Brisbane) there was a story about a rapist loose in the Nortern suburbs who is preying on women who are cycling/jogging alone.
The usual experts gave their opinions on how these women can increase their safety- the police said yell and make noise, the "self defense" expert gave some Mickey Mouse moves (which would as likely be used on someone asking directions as an attacker as there is no ID of target).
My problem is that here these authority type figures are advocating use of force on an attacker (which would most likely escalate the situation) and yet in Australia self defence is not a "genuine reason' for owning/carrying a firearm.
As has been said before many times- if only 2% of people are carrying the rest of the population are 90% safer.
Women's rights advocates will rant about how it is their right to walk down dark alleys at midnight yet they are among the first to demand that the population are disarmed.

Is it just me or does noe of this make sense?:banghead:

Makes about as much sense as most Australian gun laws.

Don't forget, "our" gun laws were not based on common sense, experience in the safe use of arms or even legitimate concerns of law enforcement bodies. But, were solely based on the prejudices of that malignant dwarf in Canberra!

Just be sure not to throw the skewer with the shrimp still on it.... :neener:

Ahh but what to do?

The trouble is I have no idea how to get out the good oil on guns these days- I have taken people to the range and they are enthusiastic (our 'team building" day is even going to be at the range, and I work for the state gov'ment), and when I give people the self defense arguments everyone says they agree.
We have no mainstream party prepared to even take a more relaxed stance on firearms or self defense. There is a new party I have been made aware of, the Liberal Democrat Party (don't think of the name in US terms) who advocate CCW, self defence laws and a reduction in the ridiculous public liability laws (among other things), but they are small, new and dificult to contact.
How do we get the message out?

Don't think the LDP is going to get very far -- its very name has already been challenged because it could be confused with the Democrats. The major parties will sink it without a trace.

Barring an absolutely calamitous event (war, invasion), you are never going to see CCW in Australia. Well, not in your lifetime anyway. In fact, I predict an even further tightening of the screws next year (2007), and further actions put on the "prohibited" list. (Pumps and lever actions spring readily to mind; as do S/A handguns.)

There is NO support in Australia for firearms from ANY vaguely mainstream political party. :cuss:

Regretfully, Bruce in West Oz has said it well......

Thanks, as John in Melbourne notes, to the malignant dwarf in Canberra.:fire:
And to the urban masses of Australia's coasts - whose primary concern is not their fast-disappearing rights, but who's winning footy.

By all means we ought to keep trying to get out the message -

but the audience seems to be deaf and dumb.:(

Myself, I'm heading over to Arizona to look for a place near my daughter's -

Rest assured that while there I'll get my CWL and some appropriate hardware of the sort that would make little Johnny Howard wee his knickers.:D

Keep a baby king brown in a purse...Honestly Constable, I have no idea where that snake came from... Pity it bit that man...

King Brown, does it kill faster than a Colt Python?

I wonder

If you can train a kangaroo for defense purposes? Then again, I am sure we can't have nasty "Assault Kangaroos" running around... :uhoh:

"Peoples Republik, free nations are totally upside down.As the Goldy-Looking Chain rap group would say:"Guns, don't kill people rappers do,call the police...

It seems that we, have got less firearms rights that the nonce slocked up in the bloody slammer.:banghead: The nonces, get the 5 star treatment, while the honest shooters, who pay their taxes, get the bare minimum and little respect from their respective societies.:cuss: :banghead: :fire: :banghead:

You are right about that- the news is full of stories about criminals being treated lightly and the families of their victims being forgotten or treated like criminals themselves.
Then there is the schizophrenic attitude of the media to self defence-if someone chases a grub out of his house or even shoots them you cannot predict the media's response-he could be hero or villain.
The trouble is that if you try to get our message across the media will present you as some camo clad red flannel lovin' KKK militia wannabe (this has happened in Qld) and you won't get a fair forum.
I do my bit by introducing people to the sport and discussing the conservation role (as do contless others) but our effect is limited especially when the media and ignorant uni types seem to form "public" and legal opinions (JFTR I have degrees in Psychology and Health Science so there but for..).
End of rant-Bring on the zombies

Is there any "talk radio" in Australia? What is needed is to get the message out to the voters there. Does the government control the electronic media? Many years ago there was pirate radio off of the coast of England. Perhaps this is an option.

Yes, I think it was Kiss FM.Kiss FM is now an official, licensed radio station-but in the late 1980s it was a pirate radio station:I think that Kiss FM was the radio station, you were talking about.

If you are found to be in possession of them, then you will be arrested, charged with posesession of an illegal weapon and will end up being tried in a "kangaroo court"-who will almost certainly give you an unfair trial.:) :)
