Sell, wait and sell, hold forever, what to do with AR15?

Hmm, I'd suspect that we are currently seeing the peak in prices, I really don't expect the average selling price for a basic AR to go much over $2k. Also, I really don't think an AWB will go through as the talk seems to be subsiding somewhat in the face of real issues (Fiscal Cliff). BUT, even if it does most of the AWB proposals that I've seen floating around call for a ban on, amongst other things, the TRANSFER of "Assault Weapons". If that were to pass, there would obviously be no legal market for ARs...

All in all, I'd say if you are going to sell, you should do it pretty soon. I saw a used S&W M&P15 ORC like mine go for $1875 on Gunbroker the other day. Every bit of my financial education is screaming at me to sell off one of my AR's for a cool $1k profit... don't think I can quite bring myself to actually do it though.

I have 6 AR's but none of them I consider "EXTRA". I have bought and sold them for years and finally have exactly what I want so no I'm not selling.

I visited the LGS about 30 minutes ago (11:30 am on 12/28). They had just gotten in seven S&W M&P's. They are selling for $1,499. If i could make $1,000 right now, I'd be all over it.

if I had an EXTRA AR15, I'd sell it now. However the only gun out my dozen that I consider to be extra is my Tomcat. I'd have to have a lot AR15s to consider one extra.

hell ya I am selling it...No need for the base models and they are just bringing too much profit not to sell.

One thing I have not heard discussed much is this:

I know everyone thinks the prices have peaked and people think that they will drop BUT.....


A few of my LGS that I am friends with and one that sells wholesale have all stated that the MFR has increased their prices to the dealers buy an average of 60%

If that is the case, I am afraid that prices may not come down for a while after the craze. It will take a slump in sales for the MFR's to reduce their prices...

Also, keep in mind that the LGS and online stores you think may be gouging you may be getting gouged themselves...

I would keep. I'd love the money, but if anything nasty happens down the road, I'd feel like I screwed myself out of an AR. Also, I generally don't sell guns. Once it's mine, it's MINE!

I can't see a scenario where the AWB passes again, even in its original form. It's widely regarded as having been a failure and a mistake. The high cap ban has a theoretical chance of going through but it's remote. The Dems may go with a plan they know will lose in order to keep this issue alive for the next election cycle. Or they may come up with a taxation scheme to make what they need most of all--money. I think that's where Biden's mind may be going. But we shall see.

And as far as where the blow will fall, think of it this way. If you're going to cut off water supply you don't try to build a dam across the lake, you build it at the narrow points. That means primers, powder and key components at the manufacturing end--not finished products in the hands of hundreds of millions. So that's what I've been stocking up on. There are only a few companies making these things, but they're the sine quo non of everything post-flintlock. And they're already highly regulated with very narrow profit margins and small work forces. How hard would it be to tax the life out of them? Not difficult at all.

At this point it's not about the money. If I absolutely need the money then yes, but it'll be one of the last things of all of the other things I can sell first.

If it was my only one I would keep it. If it is truly and extra then I might sell it and stock up on ammo, accessories, etc.

Think the prudent move is to wait and see what becomes reality in terms of law. Not to make decisions based out of fear. But I definitely get why some would sell and others would buy at this stage of the game.

I enjoy shooting the AR more than any of my other rifles. Worried about prices dropping and loosing my profit opportunity? Nah. My cars depreciated more in the last two years than the value of my entire gun collection.

I have a couple AR's. Why? because I want to have a couple AR's. I have had a A2 for over twenty years and for many years I wanted an Mforgery, so I built one from a PSA kit.

If I sold one I would be mad at myself for getting rid of a rifle that I like. People act like money is everything, yes it is nice to have, but what is it for? In my case beyond the basics like food and shelter, I go to work every day so that I can afford the other things that I like to have (old cars, motorcycles, guns).

So you make a grand on the sale of your AR, what are you going to do with it? For me, the only reason to sell a gun is if I don't particularly like it. Then I'll sell it and use the money to buy another that I want to have.

I have a CMMG and a Colt, if I had to sell one the CMMG will go after being returned to its original condition.
