I came across some Sellier & Bellot SS109.(It is stamped: S&B 07 5.56x45)I know M855 and SS109 use the same bullet but can be loaded to different velocity. My question is, Is the Sellier & Bellot SS109 with the S&B head stamp as "HOT" as M855? From what I have gathered there are 2 differnt stamping on this load from S&B and the other marked load is the equal to M855.

Not acording to the Ammo Orcle on AR15.com. They are both green tip 62gr penatrator rounds.

Scroll down.... It says that they both use the same bullet but the ss109 may or may not be loaded the same as M855. So, I was wondering if the S&B stuff as posted above is to the same specs as M855.

SS109 is the NATO designation for the for the 62 grain tungsten-tip penetrator 5.56 round. M855 is the U.S. designation for the round.

It has slightly better penetration at longer distances; but it performs about like most ball ammo armor-wise.

M855 is SS109 ammo; but not all SS109 ammo is M855 if that helps :) There are additional specifications required to meet M855 standards that aren't required by SS109 - though I couldn't tell you what the differences are.

We just went full circle here!

Ok, I saw some posts on AR15.com that had indipendent tests of the S&B SS109 with the other case markings that were a litle hotter than published M855. I was wondering if anyone has any ME/MV on the S&B with the case marked as stated in the first post.

So, All M855 is SS109, but not all SS109 is M855, but some SS109 is M855..... Whos ond first.......

Actually if I am not mistaken, the M855/SS109 is a 62gr mild steel core ammo.

It is the M955 that is a tungsten-carbide cored, black tipped AP ammo, and apparently rare as hen's teeth.

My limited knowledge.

Others I'm sure know more about this than I do, but my understanding is this: nearly any ammy loaded with a 62gr bullet with a steel penetrator can be labeled "SS109". Only ammo loade with .62gr penetrator bullets AND meeting the U.S. MIL-STD requirements can be labeled M855.

So, all M855 is SS109.
Not all SS109 is M855.
