Lookin around for a good knock around semi-auto .22, anybody got any recomendations? So far the ones I'm looking at are the ruger 10/22s, marlin 60's, 795's or 70 papoose's (especially interested in that one) , or remington 597's. Accuracy is not pivotal, if it can shoot 1 inch groups at 100 feet I'd be ok with that, but I'd like it to be reliable.
(unlike my POS AR-7 I'm replacing :barf: :barf: ) Good sights would be nice too, as I dont like scopes on the truck guns.

Thanks, the 22 junkie

795 or 60

I have the 795 and think it's a great little gun - eats whatever it is fed, never had a malfunction and accurate - at least as much as you're looking for. I know mine is more accurate than I am. I wish I'd never put that scope on it. :) Fun and lightweight. I will say, however, if you plan on throwing a sling on it and putting it across your back, get the Mod 60 marlin cause the mag digs into your back with the 795.

My $.02.

If you like to do mods and want to tinker with it, go with the 10/22. If you want to just pick up and shoot, the Marlin 60

I got myself an old montgomery wards westernfield semi automatic tubular. fun little gun and best of all it was free. I'd go with a marlin out of your choices

the marlin mod 60 will be the most accurate, probably. the mod 60 will also hold the most rounds. the remmy has the most adjustable and best sights. the papoose is very nice, but will be the most expensive, and you gotta watch that front bbl nut, they tend to come loose as you shoot. the other marlins will have mags cheaper, and more available than other mag fed .22's.

my recommendation, FWIW...

if you want a good, reliable, accurate gun right out of the box that has decent trigger pull, and one that you dont have to "Trick out" get a Marlin 795. its light enough to carry all day. Ive had mine for about 3 years and loved it right out of the box. i also have a 10-22 that i had to rebuild from the bottom up to make a good shooter.

Foxtrot: just a note: the G22 is made by Walther not Taurus. I would stay away from the G22. it has had some problems from what ive been hearing, reliability problems. and i just dont like guns with really high sights that are high above the bore line, i think it makes for a hard to figure point of aim and point of impact.

If you want to find out more about your guns, go to Rimfire Central to seach for your choices and read other's opinions on these guns

I've got a 795. I fired 20 rounds throught it with open sights and then put it down in disgust. It had some of the cheapest open sights I'd ever worked with. I left it sitting for two months looking for an open sight replacement.

I happened upon an old Weaver 2.5X scope and on a whim tried that on the rifle. I really started to like the rifle after that.

The pictures are 25 yards indoors and 50 yards outdoors, respectively. Not bad for a $120 gun and a scope that's probably twice as old as I am. The trigger is not the best, but I can't bring myself to upgrade it since it would probably cost as much as I have in the gun.

I'd take a Marlin 60 over a Ruger 10/22.

Whoops! I get them confoozled alot. I dont know why. I agree with you on the sights part. I havnt really heard anything about the guns reliability so I would agree with you there if I knew what I was talking about.

I own four .22s and like 'em all, an old M152 Mossberg, an old Remington bolt (extremely accurate) M512X, an AR7 Charter Arms version (packable and reliable and acceptably accurate, good motorcycle rifle, fits in saddle bags), and my newest, a 10-22. The Remington is by far the most accurate. I can shoot near MOA with it on a windless day. The old Mossy and the Ruger are about 3-4 MOA guns with most ammo except that the Mossy really seems to like RWS Target, turns it into a 1 1/2 tp 2MOA gun somehow. Haven't tried it in my 10-22, don't have a scope on that one. It's my iron sight gun and I'm keeping it that way. It's stainless, have a Hogue stock on it, rugged, makes a good knock about .22. I have nothing against marlin M60s, good guns. I just sorta like the 10-22s for the aftermarket support and the rotary mags. I don't intend to buy anything for it, but heck, you never know what I'll want to do in the future. I can turn that thing into a match rifle if the need ever arises.

If I just wanted a knock about .22, I wouldn't pass on any decent brand .22 for a good price. I'd hit the pawn shops and such and look for bargains. You might find something like that old Mossberg I have. It don't look like much, but it sure is a servicable gun. I've had it for 40 years and it was 10 years old when I got it. LOL. It's killed a lot of squirrels.
