Hi,

I'm looking at either the Remington 597, Marlin 795, Marlin 60, Ruger 10/22, Savage 64, and Mossberg 702.

Can you guys help me narrow down my list? I'm not modding them, just want something accurate and reliable.

10/22 used to be my main squeeze when coon hunting. Its the John Wayne of 22 semi-autos. Mine shoots CCI Mini-mags extremely well.

Mini-mags are some of the best shooting .22lr I have seen. A .22 that won't shoot them, likely won't shoot anything.

10/22 is great. It's cheap, and shoots pretty damn good out of the box. If that's not good enough there, there's a large aftermarket of parts to choose from to customize it, or make it even better. You can't go wrong with it.

The rotary magazines do have the occasional jam, but they are much less frequent than most other .22's.

The Marlin 60 is interesting because it requires no magazines. The tube magazine under the barrel holds 14 rounds. The rifle is inexpensive and accurate.

Another vote for the 10/22. If I could only have one of my rifles, it would be the one I would have. I've never had a problem with it, and it shoots straight.

10-22 for sure. Tons of aftermarket parts including 25-50 round mags. Stay away from the plinkster.

well sence everybody else has said 10/22 - i'll chime in and say marlin! and to be honest either the 60 or 795 , and just so you know you can get a 25 round clip for the 795

Savage 64 here. Mine is dead on accurate and likes Federal bulk. Extra 10 shot mags are ~$15.

Another way of saying that is you are limited to that one magazine.

With the 10/22 I can load up mags ahead of time, and easily load and unload the rifle.

I've shot a Marlin 60, a Remington 597, and a Ruger 10/22 and I can really say that I haven't noticed a great amount of difference in any of them as far as accuracy and shooting goes, but I wasn't shooting to very great distances.

I went with the Marlin 60 because it was one of the most inexpensive options, and it had a dove-tail scope mount grooved on the receiver--with the 10/22 you have to mount the scope rail to put any optics on. Other than that I liked the idea of the tube mag--to be honest though I kind of thought it was just a self-contained spring and front-loaded, I would have preferred that.

Anyway, I just wanted a rifle out of the box to put a scope on that was really accurate and reliable, and the Marlin had a good reputation for this, and it was better priced than the 10/22.

Since you don't want to modify whatever you pick I would say a Marlin 60 or 795. I'm sure a 10/22 would be fine but from my experience the Marlins should be a little more accurate and reliable for less money. It's hard to beat a 795 for around $100.

I'm probably going to go with a Marlin, but 60 or 795 is the question. Recommendations? I wish the 795 came in a wood stock!

A lone dissenter

I went with the Remington 597. It simply felt more like a real rifle than the 10/22, and was considerably cheaper. In matters or accuracy, I know that this rifle is easily more accurate than I am.

The Marlin 795. My brother's works great, after a year and thousands of rounds, and it's really inexpensive. It is very handy, light and balanced, and very easy to disassemble and clean. It isn't incredibly accurate, but it's good enough.

I bought a Mossberg 702 plinkster. With a $7.00 dollar scope on it shoots nice groups at 40 yds. It weighs only 4 lbs and you can buy additional 10 round magazines. I also paid around $120.00 otd.

10/22 - Mine has about 15-20,000 rounds through it and can still drive tacks. Never fails, feels great, small and handy, inexpensive hi-cap mags available...other than being a .22, I'd say it's close to the perfect rifle.

Marlin 795. It will do whatever the 10/22 will do only more accurately.

Disclaimer: Before all you 10/22 lovers start to whine, I'm not saying that all 10/22's are innacurate. The 2 that I had experience with were not as accurate as my 795.

I have heard that (I have no actual experience with either, I have a Savage Mark II Bolt) Remington 597 is more accurate and reliable out of the box for less than Ruger 10/22. However the 10/22 has way more accessories out there for it so you can make the rifle your own.
