Find a well stocked gun store and handle as many different models as you can, you will usually know the right one because it will feel good when you pick it up.
I was looking and after advice and no consensus from friends I started at one end of the hand gun counter and stopped looking when I picked up the kahr cw 45.

You need to be more specific on how you plan to carry the weapon. Are you going to use a holster? If so a belt holster, or inside the pants holster, or a shoulder holster. I have been carrying for over 40 years and have them all. Believe me it does make a difference in comfort and concealability. Weight is an important factor. A heavy weapon will wear you down and you will be reluctant to carry it for extended periods. Also I would recommend Novak night sights. They will nor snag on clothing. Also do not have an exposed hammer, it will get snagged at some point.

Luke,
I can't offer you pistol advice, but along the lines of the poster before me: IWB seems the simplest way to carry, if you go that way, I'd advise getting the best holster and gun belt you can afford. I think they make a huge difference in the comfort of carrying. If carrying ain't comfortable and as simple as possible, you probably won't.

you can't go wrong with an xd a glock, and the m&p lines. i own a glock 23 and an xd service model in .40 and it has over 16,000rds through it it is reliable accurate, and an all around great shooter. my glock has far less rounds through it but it is equally as reliable and accurate. even though i like the glock, i love the xd, and there is no other handgun that i shoot better or feel more comfortable carrying.

I carry a Glock 30 and love it. The XD is a good shooter as well. Stay away from Kahr, they cost to much for a gun that is really picky with ammo (I have seen way too many jam at the range). I carry the Glock because it feeds everything I run through it, which is important for me to know that it wont fail me when I need it to count.

FWIW, my gun in particular does not like limp wristed shooters, I don't shoot that way but some people I introduce to shooting have jamming problems. I can one hand it with dominate and off hand just fine with +p loads, but not everyone can. I would recommend shooting one before you buy one to make sure you are not a limp wristed shooter.

Bersa Thunder 45 ACP. $332. I have not heard a bad thing about Bersa, yet.
