Semi-auto recommendations for Lefty's?

As another LH person, I have found the HK P7 to be completely ambidextrous for shooting and reloading - it might be a tad heavy for CCW for some people - but there are no added levers or buttons except for the takedown one to snag on anything

The Ruger P-series guns have ambidextrous mag release & safety/decockers. The slide stop is on the left however.

Though I am a right hander I have also worked quite extensively with the HK P7 and would consider it the hands down best choice for a left hander. (of course that is also my opinion for right handers as well)

The gun can be shot accurately for range and competition work and can conceal well with the right holster. It is the most ambidextrious pistol I have yet encountered. The PSP and M8/10/13 versions are equally lefty friendly.

The only thing that is not ambidextrious is the ejection port.

Why HK of course, their entire lineup is fully ambi friendly. Lefty's should reward companies who engineer this into their pistol designs as a requirement.

My beef with HK is that if it has a safety lever, in most cases one has to pick which side it is on.

That is great for an individual shooter, but not for a nightstand gun where I am a southpaw and my wife is right handed and it is conceivable that she may wind up using the pistol.

I think his beef with HK is the fact that they COULD have designed it to be reversible, rather than dedicate the purchase of a not-so-inexpensive gun to one hand or the other. How hard could it have been to do so? Beretta and some other makes offer reversible controls.

No, IT IS designed to be reversible. He wants one on both sides. All of HK's line are 100% ambi.

The entire HK line is 100% ambi and in addition each pistol can be converted to any of up to 9 different variants, depending on the model. Name another brand that offers that kind of choice for lefty's or anyone else.

Below is for the USP, the other models are the same.

By using a modular approach to the internal components, the control functions of the USP can be switched from the left to the right side of the pistol for left-handed shooters. The USP can also be converted from one type of trigger/firing mode to another. This includes combination of double-action and single-action (DA/SA) modes and double-action only (DAO) modes.
In addition to a wide selection of trigger/firing modes, the USP has an ambidextrous magazine release lever that is shielded by the trigger guard from inadvertent actuation.

You need a total of 3 parts (fullsize or compact models) consisting of a roll pin and both left and right safeties.

Part # for the roll pin is 982783 and is used in both the compact and full size models.
Part #s for the left/right levers on compact models is 217756/217758.
Part # for the left lever on fullsize models is 217755/217757.

Lefty's

Almost any 1911 can have the ambi safety, but the mag release is on the left, which works for lefty.

My HK USP CT has the ambi safety, and the best mag release in the business. The HK P30 has no safety on the 9mm, the 40 come with or without a safety.

I too am a lefty.

Since you asked about a carry gun my vote would be a gen 4 26 or 27. Change the mag release and just rack the slide then you are all set. I am a lefty and find the gen 4 platform to work well.
The only problem is it isn't easy to find gen 4 mags. Once you change the mag release it has to be gen 4 mags (9th generation mags).

I am left handed and have no problems whatsoever operating my Glock 19. In fact that is one of the reasons I carry a Glock. I consider it left hand friendly.

I'm a lefty and I run the right handed thumb controls on most anything with my trigger finger. The only guns I dislike are anything with a RH decocker but even that isn't a showstopper.

For me?
Everyday knock around is an XD40sc. Every night night-stand guardian is a Kimber fullsize .45 with ambi safety. Neither one has ever let me down.

I've got a buddy who owns all revolvers due to his "South Paw Condition"

your bud more or less has already "adapted" to revolvers........the vast majority of DA design revolvers are considered as RH tools...........

i'm a lefty.....learning and muscle memory of RH controls are no more difficult than initial learning of LH controls. Like driving a car, we do not look for "lefty" cars with the ignition switch and gear selector on the left side of the column..or a car where the brake pedal and accelerator pedal is reversed for a "lefty"......we learn and adapt to the RH controls and its quite easy.

If given a choice in the matter (and with issued firearms i ain't), the most desirable ambi feature is the manual safety (if it has a manual safety design).

2nd most desirable feature is a reversable mag release.........believe me it can come in handy wearing a gun on the left side to prevent accidental mag ejection should your holster not protect the area of the release button.....but this is more of an issue with the holster than the weapon.

slide releases......i could not care less.......

its a training issue.

I'm a lefty, and I like thumb safeties. Best choices are 1911's with ambi's, but the Ruger SR9c and M&Pc with ambi are both good lefty carry choices. I learned a long time ago to use right handed mag and slide releases.
