As I'm sure many of you have heard there are currently two serial killers on the loose here in the Phoenix metro area. One is the so-called Baseline Killer/Rapist. The other is the "Serial-Shooter".

The latter has been taking pot-shots at people and animals now for over a year. The current tally, as it were, is 6 people dead, 17 wounded, plus 5 dead dogs and 3 dead horses.

This "Serial-Shooter" is of particular concern to me becuase the last two shootings have a little too close to home for my comfort. There was a shooting on July 22 that wounded a man on a bicycle that was about 2.5 miles from where I live. Then, this past Sunday (July 30) a woman was killed less than a mile from my home. Today the police confirmed that she was a victim of the same shooter as the guy, and all of those previous shootings.

The shooter's MO seems to be to attack people walking or bikeing alone on a fairly major street between 10PM-4AM, though there have been some attacks in broad daylight. Cops won't say what kind of gun nor what caliber (s)he/they are using, nor will they say from what angle any of the victims were shot. However, one report indicated the cops were investigating an area 120 yards from the where the lastest woman would hit. If (and that's a big if) that spot was where the shooter was standing it means the shooter was either using a rifle or is one damn good handgun shooter.

So far not a single victim (at least that survived) nor any witnesses have actually seen the shooter, his vehicle, or anything that would help to identify him. Or if they have, the cops aren't saying.

So, my question to you all is this - How does one best go about defending oneself without caving into the fear of being the next victim. Body armor is impractical in this heat, and if it is a rifle that he's using, not even effective. My wife and I generally aren't out of the house between 10PM-4AM, but he's not exclusive to that time frame. It would seem that having a gun is of limited value against this threat since most if not all never even saw him/her.

Thanks.

P.S. The Baseline Killer is not nearly as much of a concern right now mostly becuase he's operating well away from where we live and work. That and simple situational awareness combined with being armed will go a very long ways towards defending against him.

I'd say all you can really do is the same thing you do all the time to stay safe. Don't go out alone late at night. Don't go out alone at all, if you can avoid it. Observe your surroundings. Be armed. Have a cell phone on you. Shut your blinds at night.

More particularly, avoid being alone on that fairly major street during peak hit hours when you can.

There really isn't much you can do about this sort of thing, there's no magic bullet. If he's got a rifle on you, and he sees you and you don't see him, you're really at the bastard's mercy. So avoid that situation as much as you can.

Other than that? I would say don't let yourself live in constant fear, and you'll be doing as well as one can do.

The Sunday shooting took place near my school and the family of one of my students found the girl in the road and treated her until help arrived. Its damn scary--no witnesses. Police were asking if we had any cameras up to check vehicles passing by.

Don't be alone at night. Puts a crimp in trying to walk for exercise went its not 110 outside though...

Be constantly alert to your surroundings, ESPECIALLY as vehicles start slowing down. Sudden slowing should automatically raise a caution flag in your mind because the lone loser needs to keep the vehicle moving slow for better steering control as it takes aim with a weapon. No freak of nature (such as a serial shooter) is going to cruise by you at 60, 50, 40, or even 30 mph to take a shot. When conditions appear suspicious, slow down or speed up yourself to get a heavy object between you and the motorist, such as a car or tree (if possible). If this is not possible, move from walking into a jogging mode right away towards the back end of the vehicle and across to the passenger side.

This covers only one scenario as the car is approaching as you are walking in the opposite direction. I did not say anything about walking in the same direction. Assuming you are armed, if fired upon, be careful about returning fire. I'm not saying, "Don't return fire", but just know beforehand what you're getting into and if returning fire would even be worth it in a heavily or moderately populated area.

This sounds like a shoot and run kind of guy to me. I wouldn't think that he would sit around and admire his handiwork, he would rather read about it in the paper.

I think that you just have to pray that you are not his nightly target. I would avoid walking or biking anywhere. I would stay in my car for travel and try to avoid travelling after 10pm.

Eventually he will get caught. Guys like this need the thrill. Just like a drug addict he will eventually tire of this high and need to do something bigger and better to get the rush. This is probably when he will be apprehended.

Well, if they're actually the guy(s) that is great news. Just so long as they didn't just round up "twice the usual number of suspects."

I'm also kind of wondering if these Mesa shootings might have been from a copycat. We'll see though.

...don't go walking or biking alone.
Unarmed and aware at the least. I wonder if gun sales & CCW classes/licenses are up in the greater Phoenix/Mesa area as a result?

This just ain't a high probability event. Not worried about it, even walking alone. I'm more likely to die in a car crash, but I haven't stopped driving.
