What are the Seven Monthly Background checks KY does on CCDW licensees?

I found out awhile ago that Kentucky does a monthly NICS background check on every CCDW holder. This started somewhere in in 2006.
(CCDW means Conceal Carry Deadly Weapon; it is a carry permit).

I was even more surprised when I saw a reference to seven background checks Kentucky does on its monthly background checks for CCDW licensees, I am now aware of the NICS background check, but what are the six other background checks? This information seems difficult to obtain.

Also does any state have monthly background checks on their conceal carry licensees? Or is Kentucky the only state?

And if there are other states that do monthly checks on their carry permit holders, how many different checks are there?

Carry Concealed Deadly Weapons (CCDW) Section
Started processing the Law Enforcement Officer’s Safety Act licenses.
All employees in the CCDW Section received training from FBI NICS on performing background checks. Began performing all seven background checks each month on all licensees.

Thanks in advance

7 each month x all state licensees? What a wase of public funds. I'd think they had better things to do, like catching real criminals. I'm sure there must be a couple out there running the streets???

I'm pretty sure they didn't start that because they didn't have anything else to do. I'll wager you'll find that written into your CCW law somewhere ... and it's probably a typo that nobody saw/bothered to correct.

.
I was going to discount the Seven background checks as a possible typo until I found this on a Warren County Kentucky Sheriff's page ....

"WCSO Records assists Warren County Concealed Carry Deadly Weapons applicants, and then forwards applications to Kentucky State Police’s CCDW Division for a seven-phase background check. "

I agree with medalguy, that's an extreme waste of taxpayer dollars.

It'd be interesting to see just how much a year that program costs.

Yes, but it doesn't say they -re do them- every month for every CCW holder.

Anyway, the "typo" I was referring to, if they actually do all 7 again for every holder, every month, would be a typo in the LAW that established the procedure that lead them to believe they had to re-do them all every month.

That would be way stupid, even for the government ... but if it's in the statute they have to do it until it's corrected, in the statute.

I like to know which states run monthly background checks (NICS or otherwise) on those who have conceal carry permits. Maybe Kentucky is not the only state that does this?

A followup. Another site confirms the monthly NICS check.

http://www.kc3.com/news/nics_update.htm

"Around this same time, KC3 learned that the KSP was performing NICS checks on every licensee every thirty days in order to determine if the licensee remained qualified to possess a license under the terms of the licensing law."

Here on this site it says three checks are done.

"Ky runs a background check on you through the KSP database, the FBI database and the ATF database. The guy I was talking to said he would check to see if all of my background checks were done. He said they were, and that I passed all of them,"

There is definitely more than one, and I am still trying to track down if just NICS or other databases that are done each month.

Heck, just checking the databases. This could (and likely is) just an automated task someone does. Once a month they run three computer programs on the CCP file of holders and it spits back the people that now do not qualify. It would take maybe 15 minutes, tops. I write and run programs for work like this all the time.

Just IMHO, but I think that Colorado Handgunner has the right idea.

I'm not sure that the folks at NICS, NCIS, and other databases would be excited by the resource hit, but you probably could let a computer loose seven times a minute if you wanted to without much human interaction or cost.

Really, I don't think it's a bad idea to do that every once in a while, just to make sure that the Sheriff (who seems to have a lot of potential responsibility here in OH) is fully aware if somebody jumps off the deep end, but once a week should be plenty.

Regards,

Yeah, doesn't seem like something insane in terms of resources unless someone is manually doing it...but that doesn't make seem likely.

Wow that's crazy. Should be illegal.

Why should it be illegal? Isn't it just responsible government to check on and revoke permits when the holder no longer qualifies for one? Drivers licenses are revoked when the licensee is no longer qualified to hold one as are professional licenses. What makes a CCDW any different?
