Sharpening with a Strop

I agree with Hso's post #44. If you use power tools for sharpening a knife or sharp edge, do it very slowly and carefully. A grinding wheel sent me to the emergency room once when I was young and dumb. I don't go to an emergency room easily either. The only time I have ever been to an emergency room was when I had injuries (2x) on the job and they weren't pretty.

Since I started this thread, it is appropriate that I summarize what I have learned and where I am with this method.
I have three leather strops:
1. Chromium Oxide- I strip and clean this one with conditioner weekly
2. Actually this is an old high quality belt that I treat with 3 micron diamond paste. I rub the paste in until it dries.I do strip it with 1600 grit occasionally.
3. 1 Micron diamond spray. I spray the strop and rub in the spray until it dries. As above I do clean the leather occasionally.

Methodology: I start with the Chromium with trailing strokes (as with all three strops). I use a fairly upright angle and look for some friction as I pull the blade across the leather.
Next I go to the 3 micron strop and drop the angle still looking for friction or "tug" as someone else posted.
Lastly, I go to the 1 Micron strop with the same angle as #2. I repeat my strokes until I feel a very sharp edge. Pressure is the weight of the blade times two. I know that most people say to use a light stroke. I use a heavier stroke with good results.
I am by no means an expert and my comments are from a new strop user. Proceed at your own speed.

Jim
