SharpShooter, History Channel

excuse me if this is a repost. but tonight, july21st , at 8pm eastern time (check local listings). history channel will be having a show trying to recreate legandary shots in american culture ( annie oakley type stuff)
not that alot of this stuff is new to you and i. it should still be interesting to watch so we can rant and rave about inacuracys of information.
Wild Bill Hickok. John Wesley Hardin. Buffalo Bill. Doc Carver. Annie Oakley. Some of these skillful shots used their talents to survive in a hostile and lawless American West. Others honed their abilities onstage to make a living performing for audiences. But it turns out their legends might be the least accurate thing about these shooters. So famous are these historic gunslingers, it's hard to separate the truth from the myth...until now. We stack up some of today's greatest sharpshooters against the legendary feats of the past. Bill Oglesby, Jerry Miculek, and Tom Knapp demonstrate attempt to recreate famous gun-slinging achievements. We also cast a skeptical eye at many stories culled from newspaper accounts and pulp fiction novels. Along the way, we'll meet some of history's greatest shots. In the process, we might just blow a hole in some of those treasured old legends. So keep your eye on the target, because you won't believe your eyes.

Thanks for reminding us...inaccurate or not I'll still plan on watching. IMHO The History Channel is usually the best thing on anyway...

Thanks for the reminder - I had forgotten about it. Looked from the promo's like it'd be worth watching...

Another BIG thanks! Besides not wanting to miss it myself, my wife's Old West "hero" is Annie Oakley and I know she would be mighty ticked to miss anything about her. :)

From the commercials it seems like it's worth a look.

Just watched and taped it. What a great show! No anti anything in this production, other than to not attempt the stunts yourself. Thanks for bringing my attention to it. It will be a great entertainer at many future shooting sports related events.:)

Switched between it and Shooting Gallery and American Rifleman.

It was an OK show but I gotta say, some of the gun handling made some of the gun myths worse. Jerry and Tom did Ok but the other exhibition shooter (the one who has been on Amer. Rifleman in previous seasons) was...ugh. Twirling a loaded single action (un-cocked), jeez.

Three threads merged.

Sharpshooters was an awesome show! I enjoyed seeing the historic guns and the expert shooters,

When will the show be on again so that I can record it, and pass the word around?

i liked it, i just woulda liked it if they spent a little more on safety and didnt use the old "gun pointed at the camera" trick. good show though. goes to show how good these guys are. i told my friends to watch it, especialy tom knapp

Yes rule #2 was somewhat ignored

However - a very good presentation I thought - made more interesting by use of high speed photography.

To see the classic Ed McGivern footage was good and of course Tom Knapp and Jerry Miculik - were well - breathtaking.

Guess it gives most of us something to ''aim'' for ;)

I liked it, course it got my uncle going "hey why cant you do that"

Cause I don't have ammo companies giving me tens of thousands of rounds a year to practice with and free top of the line guns for one.....

Seriously though, I'd love to be able to do that stuff

NEXT AIRING.. 1200 JUL 22, 06

Hit it quick :D

Edited to add:

Sharp Shooters:
Wednesday, July 26 @ 8am ET

Sharp Shooters:
Wednesday, July 26 @ 2pm ET

And some who watched will copy Oglesby's unsafe twirling the gun etc and shoot themselves !!!...Let's seehow well Miculik would do given the same equipment as the old timers....The PBS channel recently had a fine program about [surprise !] Annie Oakley, a very interesting program !

I dont know why they didnt show any Bob Munden footage. Also they didnt include some of Jerry's best work. I liked it though and would watch it again.

Actually, I think Jerry Miculek would be about the same. I watched him in a demo and he could pretty much pick up any handgun offered to him and duplicate his speed and accuracy(well, I didn't see him shoot a single action, but I bet he could witha little practice). He was as awesome with a .357 snubby as he was with one of his competition guns. He fired a snub loaded with 3 rounds of .38 and 3 rounds of .357 to illustrate the difference in power. Until you've heard .38 and .357 shots so close together it's hard to grasp the difference.

The man sounds like he's shooting an automatic weapon with everything he picks up. Awesome. Great showman, friendly, good guy to be around.

On a side note, all the superstars like Jerry that I've met in the firearms world seem to be personable and friendly toward the fans. I love that. :)

Tom Knapp was amazing! Hitting those thrown aspirins with a 22! And not just one lucky shot.

As for Jerry Miculek. I always wondered just how accurate those ultra fast handgun shooters were. Now I know . . his first rapid string of 6 shots under 1 sec. from a double action revolver were grouped tightly in the center of the plate!

Poor, poor gunhandling from the gent with the Rugers. Also, "cancer stick", not "cigarette"? :scrutiny:

At least Tom Knapp didn't say it, he simply said "in the current mentality, cigarettes are bad, so let's put this one out..."

I now know how to say Jerry's last name, though!

One of my few gripes about the show was when the firearms historian shot the musket then jumped to the Trapdoor Springfield to show the effects of rifling on a projectile.

He should have used a Kentucky, Hawken or even an 1862 Springfield (the rifle that the Government converted to the Trapdoor) with a patched roundball (like the musket) then jump to the Trapdoor. It is called continuity:banghead: . Comparing PRB to a metalic centerfire cartridge is like comparing a Curved Dash Oldsmoble to a 57 Chevy.

I guess because time was short for explanations so we got the Cliff Notes version:scrutiny: .
