Well I left my 20's behind on my birthday back in June when I turned 30. I've been looking for a Model 57 since that day. I haven't found many since then and when I did find one it was in less condition than I was willing to tolerate.

I go into my local gun store today with the intention of ordering a New Model 57 "classic" which I really didn't want to do because I really wanted a pre-lock. Well as I walked by the guns I see this beautifully blued honey sitting amongst a bunch of Auto chuckers.

It was a well kept Model 29-3 with an 8 3/8" barrel. I asked if i could check it out. The man handed it to me and this baby was in mint condition! You could hardly and I mean hardly make out any cylinder latch drag marks on it, bluing was all there not even a scratch and tight as hell.

Well I bought it in remembrance of my last year being in my 20's "29".

I already took her out back and fired 30 rounds through her and I couldn't be happier!:cool:

She is going to be my new deer gun as I have decided to hang my long guns up and get into hand gun hunting only.

I’m still looking for a nice Model 57 though!

Twelve shots same loads same distance: The hole from next to the back of the grip was the ricochet from the next photo shot.

Good job saving her, very chivalrous of you! You did the right thing. If I was in your position, I hope I would have the wherewithal to do the same. Have fun with that beauty.
 
Just picked up a 29-2 in similar condition, shot a bit more I suspect, but very nice nonetheless. So, I share, and celebrate, your enthusiasm. Happy shooting!
 
I found a similar model 25 that had been refinished. Picked it up for a song and it quickly became my favorite target-shooting revolver. I am partial to the .45 Colt and, therefore, partial to Ruger for heavy-duty guns, but my Smith is a real joy to shoot.

BAD move to begin handgun hunting with it however. Why? Cause it is MORE ADDICTIVE than CRACK! You do have the perfect tool for it though. ENJOY!
 
I know how you feel. I picked up that 25-5 (picture in another thread) to save it from being hung on a rack surrounded by....(choke...gasp)...Glocks...and Sigs :eek: ;) . I had to rescue it. They were starting to close in on it. I think any gentleman here would have done the same thing.

Nice 29 you got there. Good shooting too.
 
Enjoy your Model 29. I have a 8 3/8" M-57 that is my most accurate 41 mag. It also was my first 41 mag acquisition and was to be used for deer hunting like you.

The 57 is my dream revolver! I truly believe that if the .41 Special had come out before the magnum, like the .38 and .357 did, it would be a much more popular caliber to this day. Did you know you can get new .41 Special LSWC 210gr ammo for $27.50 for 50 rounds? And 'Keith Style' 230gr .41 Spec for $31 for 50 rounds? Here's the link to reedsammo.com:

Well if that isn't the cheeziest and sleeziest excuse I've ever heard to justify slipping a new gun in past the watchful eyes of the Commandant..... I just wish I'd thought of it first... :D

The new gun looks fantastic. And it sounds like it's found a truly appreciative new home. I wish the two of you lots of years of happy shooting.


So now I need to find a gun which I can buy up this way that is a model 59 of some sort. Sadly the S&W 59 with its 4 inch barrel is classified as a prohibited gun which means that me, without any sort of grandfathered ownership rights, can't own one. The only way would be to have a gun smith buy one for me then fit it with an extended 106mm barrel to make it into a Restricted..... I've got two years to make such a thing happen since I just turned 58.... :D

I saved this Model 14-4 from a similar situation ... it was surrounded by Glocks, Tauri 24x7s, XDs, and the most pimptastic gold tiger striped Desert Eagle you can imagine :what: ! The horror! There were a bunch of young guys in there drooling all over that "Deagle". :barf:

I had to do something!

This was about five years ago. Paid $330 for it.

Speaking of the 29-2, I bought a 4" example a few months back. Probably paid $50 - $100 too much for it, but it just looked to wonderful not to buy :evil: .

I need to get my new loader (Dillon 550B) setup ASAP so I can start practicing a lot with the new gun. I have an RCB single stage loader but it's time consuming to load with it.

I have one question about grips. I don't mind the grips that came on her but they are a tad bit large, and I do have fairly large hands. I see that S&W sell the new "classic" revolvers with thinner grips. They sell them from their online site and they look nice. Has anyone used these new grips and what are your opinions on them?
 
There's no doubt that the S&W grips are more "correct". But for my large to Xlarge glove size hands the Hogue grips in either wood or rubber work just way better. Or even better would be a set of the non finger groove Arends so your hands can find their own sweet spots. I've got one each of the Hogue rubber and wood and both are good. But oddly when I scored a set of wood Hogues for my Model 17 the finger grooves were just way off. Meanwhile I recently found a set of older Arends for my N frame without finger grooves and I smile when I pick that gun up now.

So there are options out there. The problem is that everyone's hands are just different. With any luck you can try out some grips by looking at used guns with non stock grips. That'll eliminate the obvious bad ones for you. In my case the "obvious bad ones" are anything made by Pachmayr. I find them too thin side to side and too deep back to front. Just can't get a stable grip with them. But in your case perhaps they'll be ideal. Only you can tell.

Just as BC said, we really can't say what will work for you, but I do really like my Ahrends (no finger grooves). They felt a little odd at first, with their squared off front (some folks don't like that design feature), but nowadays they feel about perfect in my hands. Those squared off fronts help me relocate my grip more consistently I've found. Top notch quality too.

Here are some Ahrends no finger grooves on my S&W Model 14 and K-22. I ordered these unfinished and stained them myself with a an oil-based stain. Turned out pretty good.

Nice piece of "rescue" work there! Looks like an excellent choice ofr hunting deer with. And another vote for Ahrends grips; they look and feel great on my guns.
 
Those are some great looking revolvers, looks like I better get shoppin!
 
That is a beautiful gun. I'm going to have to mention to the wife that I didn't get one on MY 30th. Nor did I buy anything on my 40th. I think I'm long overdue.
