Sheldon Whitehouse D-RI trying to argue against high cap magazines

During this morning’s Senate hearings on gun violence, Independent Women’s Forum fellow Gayle Trotter tore into Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), scolding him for what she believes was his argument against a woman’s right to defend her family with whatever firearm she so chooses.

He's getting a note from me on this. This is exactly the type of mindset that needs to evolve.

Sheldon Whitehouse sounded like an idiot. I'm still not sure what he tried to say. He came-off as ignorant, and as uninformed and inarticulate as most antis I've dealt with.

Hundred round this, hundred round that. Unbelievable.

The antis focus on the fact that Aurora shooter used a 100 round magazine. They tend to neglect that it jammed. But it could go to show that no one in his right mind uses a 100 round magazine.

"A hundred rifle" he doesn't even know what he's spouting. Protection from tyranny not for hunting or just burglars. Why do I need a semi-auto with a 30 round magazine? Because if the government becomes (more) oppressive that's what they will bring.

Can't remember which one but CNN had a Senator speaking about how dangerous 30 magazine clips are.

I think somebody told them to use the word magazine to sound more informed but the anti's confused "magazine" with "round" and so still followed it with the word "clip".

Having seen Ms. Trotter's performance during the hearing, and also her interview with Sean Hannity last night (granted, that latter was a "soft pitch" venue), I am all for Ms. Trotter being the new spokesperson for the NRA. Wayne should swallow his pride and allow himself to do what he does best -- doing the hard lifting of organizing and politicking behind the scenes.

To say that I was blown away by Ms. Trotter's demeanor, command of the facts, and strength of personality is an understatement.

What sticks with me from Ms. Trotter's testimony at the hearing s was her talking about how a ban on scary guns would be bad because women are more confident when they have a scary gun.

I guess I see your point -- but I took her statement differently. It sounded to me like what she was saying is that anything you have in your hand that inspires greater confidence is a benefit to the person exercising self defense.

On balance, I still think someone like Ms. Trotter would provide more benefit as a spokesperson than LaPierre, vis-a-vis perception and public relations.

And I'm not totally sure her comment is objectively "wrong." If a hulking NFL lineman size bad guy is closing on a woman and she draws a gun from her purse, it probably DOES make a difference whether it is a .25 Auto or a Glock 19/23/32. A lot of the predatory types really will sneer at a woman with a tiny little purse gun. Their gut says that anybody who carries a gun like that (tiny .25 Auto) is unlikely to actually be able to shoot it. But a woman who pulls a Glock out of her purse and locks on.... the bad guy is likely to respect that.

I actually think a big bore revolver is even more intimidating from up front. Something like a S&W M296 Centennial in .44 Special. All those gleaming copper HP's peeking out of the front of the cylinder tend to make a guy reconsider!

I wouldn't think of taking Sen. Cruz from where he is!

The broader issue is that we both agree that LaPierre is flawed and faltering. We need a new "front person" to represent the face of that movement -- someone with a total familiarity of the issues, who can think on his/her feet, and presents a much more inspiring and embraceable image. Whether it should be Ms. Trotter or somebody else -- we can let the chips fall where they may.
