I inherited a Winchester Model 20 single shot .410. Using the serial number, I determined it was manufactured in 1919.

There's nothing I can see on the gun stating the length of shell it's chambered for.

Any ideas on what length shells I should use?

Thanks,

They were made for 2.5" shells.

The Blue Book states that late parts-cleanup guns could be chambered for 3", but I've always been told that the Model 20 frame wasn't strong enough to handle a steady diet of 3" ammo.

I shot backyard clays with a Model 37 .410 yesterday and 2.5" shells worked just fine if you were quick enough. A couple of the teenagers were really, really quick. Pullbang. We were shooting Rem STS 8.5, Fed Gold Medal 8.5, and Win SuperX High Brass Game Loads 6.
