I recently sold a gun online, and I asked the buyer to send me a copy of the FFL of the dealer they would be using to do the transfer. When the dealer emailed me a copy of their FFL, they also requested that I provide them with a copy of my FFL, which I obviously don't have since I am not a dealer, or my driver's license.

I really do not want to be sending a picture ID with personal information and a gun to somebody who I do not know if I don't have to. Is this a requirement to ship a gun, or is it my choice on whether or not to send a copy of my driver's license?

This is standard operating procedure for most FFLs. You're lucky that the buyer's FFL will accept a shipment from a non-FFL holder. Did the seller understand that they were buying from an individual w/o a FFL and that you will be shipping the gun yourself?

I am an FFL holder, and as of now I am still accepting transfers from individuals. While not required by law, the drivers license is good CYA for the dealer, if he is ever to get a trace request on the gun later. If you aren't comfortable sending your DL, then pay your FFL to ship it for you. It is so easy for someone to access your personal information these days, my drivers license is the least of my concerns.

+1000. That's the simple answer. Driver's license copy not required by law. If you don't want to play by the receiving FFL's rules, then don't ship the gun to them. It's their business, their rules.

The dealer wants proof of your identity.....he does not care about anything but your name and address on that DL.

Just blackout your birthdate and DL# if it makes you feel safer.

Sounds good everyone. Thanks for the responses and ideas. Onward - I did make it clear that I was a private seller.

If you are under comfortable about sending the DL info, scan it and save the scan as a pdf.

The info on the DL will be bound up in the file format, so it cannot be filtered for in transit. like as not the FFL at the other end wil ljust print a paper copy of the pdf, so that info will be as secure as the rest of his Bound Book info. Even if he just reads the open pdf file on his computer, that info is still not in a format for easy interception.

Unless the ffl regularly uses a computer in a coven of hackers and ID thieves. In which case this is a Die Heard movie and we'll all need receding hairlines and lots of unwashed violence.

I'm very surprised the dealer sent a copy of his license to you without verifying first that you're an individual seller and not a licensee. We don't send our license to individuals. Instead, they can use the ATF's EzCheck to verify our license.
