I recently order gun online and when i got it it was broken. So they are sending a replacement with a pre paid shipping label it in. They told me i box up the gun and put the label on it and then they said ethier to give it to a UPS driver or go to a UPS hub. They told me i couldnt go to "The UPS Store". Why is this?

Most of the UPS Store locations will tell you that it's illegal to ship a gun, period. With anyone. Ever. Don't ask me how I know.

It's the same with Fed Ex. If you go to the Fed Ex Kinko's, they're just as clueless. I was shipping an old 1903 stock at the UPS store and everything was going fine until the guy behind the counter realized what I was shipping. Because of the size of the box I was using, he wanted to make sure it wasn't a rifle or something like that. Instead of saying "No, it's a piece of wood", I told him it was a gun stock. He about had a coronary right there. He told me that UPS doesn't ship anything gun related as a matter of policy and started to berate me for trying to be dishonest.

I've since just started going directly to the hubs if I need to ship anything. Even the people working at the UPS and Fed Ex hubs are amazed by the cluelessness of the retail store minions.

UPS Customer Centers are the only ones that will ship firearms.

For everything else, I use USPS.

Not UPS but I just shipped a handgun through Fedex world service center which is a hub. They said the smaller stores will ship only firearm parts or disassembled guns.

Because every "The UPS Store" is a franchisee and not company owned or operated.

mdauben I believe it's based on UPS requirements, rather than any legal issues.
Exactly.

All you (or the UPS Store) needs to do is read the UPS shipping tariff, which clearly states that you may not ship firearms ftom a UPS Store or any third party retailer.

It's the same with Fed Ex. If you go to the Fed Ex Kinko's, they're just as clueless.
While they may be clueless, all you need to do is point them to their own tariff.....which clearly ALLOW shipping firearms from any FedEx Office location. (FedEx Kinkos became FedEx Office several years ago)

USPS & FedEx ship firearms every day.

FedEx Office ships according to the exact same tariff as their hubs and definitely do ship firearms including handguns.
BTW, a disassembled gun is still a firearm under Federal law. No part of any USPS, UPS or FedEx makes mention of any firearm needing to be disassembled....its just a clerk inventing his own rules.:D

i just shipped two vintage shotguns halfway across the country for repair via UPS and recived them back from the repair shop via UPS. Picked up from and deivered back to my office. Absolutely no issues.

I work for ups at a hub. The ups store and ups it self are two diffrent companies with a total diffrent rule set. UPS damaged it so UPS is going to take care of it. I move guns everyday, and I personaly treat them with more respect than I do other pakages. ( I treat them all well, I just understand as a gun owner how special they are)

The UPS store is an independent business. It doesn't have an FFL nor is it a common carrier, so it can't handle guns.

You'll have to go to the UPS hub and deal with UPS directly. If it's a long arm you can mail it. If it's a handgun you can pay an FFL to mail it for you. Mere mortals can't mail handguns.

There is nothing in Federal law or ATF regulations that prohibit a UPS Store or Big Bob's Pak n Ship from shipping or receiving firearms........its a BUSINESS policy of UPS.

BTW, hundreds of UPS Stores and other third party mail centers receive firearms every day.....many home based dealers receive all their firearm shipments that way.
