I cannot figure out this, as the way it is written at usps.com is most confusing. If pre-1899 does it matter if longarm or handgun, obsolete round or one commercially produced? There is no sticky for this on the forum, that I could find. Also, if insured, is there an issue if one goes to claim if damaged or lost, that since this is a firearm, even though antique, such claim might not be honoured? Especially since contents do not have to be declared.

Here's what they say about loss, but good luck trying to collect from the USPS. They will do everything in their power to prolong the action and to avoid payment.

432.4 Indemnity Claims
When indemnity claims pertaining to regulated firearms are filed for loss or damage to contents, claims will only be paid for complete loss under either of the following conditions:

  1. The regulated firearm has been lost, or
  2. When the mailer has provided reasonable estimates of the firearm’s value and of repair cost from a reputable dealer, and the repair cost exceeds the declared and/or actual value of the firearm at the time of mailing.
