Is it just me or has shipping increased dramatically just recently? I wanted a range bag from Midway and it's 15.50 for shipping! Forget it.

We have seen some of the ground ones change upwards but not by much. WE watch pretty close because we do fixed price shipping, so each extra penny eats into our profit margin.

Some of the express charges actually seem to have dropped a little.

Gas has gone from a national average of $1.81 when the current President took office to a current average of $3.12. When it goes up that much, your costs go up...........and don't forget about that great "free" healthcare that was passed. My wife's payroll deductions went up 30% and Blue Cross stated very bluntly that it was due to Obamacare. I imagine Midway's insurances, health care, payroll, taxes, utilities and shipping costs have all gone up in the last few years.

Remember that EVERY time government adds some new tax to business, it gets passed on to you

Price of gas goes up so does the cost of shipping.

YUP, and wait and see whats in store at the grocery store. You need to pay attention to whats happening with our economy more. They claim its getting better, and here comes inflation.

UPS implemented a price increase just a few weeks ago. I seem to recall they did the same about 9-10 months ago. You can easily check to see what UPS shipping *should* cost for a given package by using the freight calculator on their website. Bear in mind, that especially for air services, large packages often get bumped up by dimensional weight. Packages over 88" combined HxWxL are oversized and get charged as though they weigh 30 pounds. Over 108" and they are oversized 2, and are charged as though they weight 70 pounds. (Oversize charges target long pieces. The dimensional weight charges mentioned above are for bulky packages without much weight.)

There are also surcharges for residential vs commercial addresses and fuel surcharges, but these are both pretty reasonable. There are other fees, too, like "loose" items (items not contained in a box) that also get an additional $8 charge. For all services, any package over 50" long gets an $8 fee added, this is in additional to the oversize and oversize 2 length up-charges mentioned above.

To the OP's comment, It's not uncommon for me to take an order for something that weighs a few pounds and have the actual UPS cost come to over $11-12.

Oh, and all that doesn't even include insurance fees!

i was going to order a rifle sling and 1911 poster from brownells until i noticed that the shipping was 15 bucks. oh well.

When shipping costs on individual packages begins to significantly exceed the sales tax savings on out of state purchases via mail order, you will see a reduction in revenue spent at these places for common items; a good example books. I noticed that my cost went up about 5% after Jan 1 at one retailer that included "free" shipping on orders over $100.

USPS Raised Prices

As a dealer I ship USPS Priority Mail. I noticed the price went up about 35 cents for small flat rate box. No shipping charge for what was described here should come close to $12.00. Brownells has the same options I have.

Yeah it seems that free or discounted shipping is going the way of the Dodo bird IOW becoming a thing of the past.

And why shouldn't it? It is a cost to the seller and can be as much as 15%. If you are buying retail pricing from Cabela's, BASS, Gander, etc, and then paying 15% shipping versus retail locally and about 7% sales tax, you're paying too much.

Warehouse workers get paid, have insurances and taxes on their payroll.......then there's inventory carrying costs, returns, people to pick and package, the cost of packaging materials, the cost of processing returns and restocking, shrinkage, item returned that are not resellable........and on and on

YOU pay for that every time you order

I say it and I say and I say it, "Corporations don't pay taxes the end user of the product pays the taxes."

Prime example. All of the new regulations and taxes that have taken effect have driven up prices and now it's being felt.

Not exactly due to the price of gas as it is due to the devaluation of the dollar. Yes, gas prices are going up but much of it is caused by the US printing more money or borrowing more money. Yes, shipping is affected dramatically, including imports/container ships.

Guys, nearly EVERYTHING went up in prices on Jan 1, gun related or otherwise...not unlike most every year.

Gas has gone from a national average of $1.81 when the current President took office to a current average of $3.12.

Not that I'm an Obama supporter...but the day of his inauguration the Dow Industrials closed at 7949; today it closed at 11787. Oil closed at less than $39/bbl on 20 Jan 09, today it closed at $90.95/bbl.

Can't blame high gas prices today on Obama any more than you can blame high gas prices in the summer of 2008 on Bush.

But yeah, any economist that isn't bent totally to the left could tell you that businesses ALWAYS pass higher costs through to the end consumer...including regulatory expenses like taxes.

The market was open today?

Don't forget to enclude the cost of getting to the store and back home at $3.25 a gal.

HIS economic principles are the driving factor.....but that is another thread in another forum
costs have gone UP, for a variety of reasons already mentioned.........ergo, your shipping costs have also

Insurance is expensive because insurance companies say it is, and why would they lie to us ? For 14 years I've been the administrator of a plan that covers 90 employees and their families, and every year the cost goes up. I believe absolutely nothing that they tell me. But, that's another thread.
