Midways Pricing

I believe that Midway, like the majority of companies that ship hundreds of thousands of orders every year set their shipping prices on an average.

This means that over the course of the year, or several years they average out how much they have actually paid for shipping, then set their rates accordingly.

You must keep in mind that when they ship small items for what seems like a rediculous shipping price, they are also LOSING money on larger items. So they use an average and hope to break even at the end of the year.

Oh and for what its worth, pulling, packing, and shipping small orders IS a time killer and a horribly innefficient use of time.

I can honestly say that this is the first time ever that I have regretted making a post on any forum. Apparently I have pissed quite a few people off. Judging by some of the replies and the pm's I have gotten, it would appear that you cannot voice a question or an opinion without being attacked one way or the other. I can tell you that I will never make this same mistake ever again. So, hopefully this topic dies out quick so I don't have to see it again.

Thanks
Adam

I like Midway and have spent a lot of money buying stuff from them. I have a C&R license and that helps. But, the main problems I seem to have is that one or more of the items I want is always back-ordered, so I get pushed to another order and another shipping charge.

Interesting that LL Bean is offering free shipping and other companies are matching.

My girlfriend and I do enough business with Nordstrom's that we get free shipping.

I prefer USPS to UPS and Fedex. At my gate I have sign that say please place deliveries here in a nice covered area. The UPS idiot will place the packages all over the place and sometimes further away then my package area. Fedex the normal gal is good. her replacement is 50%. USPS never had an issue.

Depending on what I am ordering from TVs to tick preventative I take into account final price and customer service.

My lcoal tire store always beat Tire Rack on prices on wheels, tires etc and that includes mounting and balancing. I will drive about 90 minutes to their store. They are the only tire store I know of that does balancing on the vehicle

USPS is the red because of a stupid law regarding pension funding?

Hunterdad: One thing you will come to realize is that here on "Thehighroad" no matter what you say or comment about, there are always those who disagree. Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing bad about a good debate..however, it users like "oneounceload" that disrespectfully bash other members...after all, if we always conformed and always agreed there would be no need to be free. I gave my opinion, which is what you originally asked for. I have learned not to argue back with those type of members...just continue on and keep a good thread going! ;)

Shipping is a business.Big business.Midway is not the only
one playing the game.Shipping is an IRS loophole. Some
companies sell their products for a loss, just to make
a killing on shipping. The company declares less profit
to the IRS from their products, yet make the same or more
by charging for a "tax write off" outrageous "Handling" charge.
You know.Tape, boxes, packing, labor, stuff like that. Some even charge
for gas to the post office, when they never leave the property
because the shippers come to them.Legally they can't charge
more than "shipping" actually cost.(stamps),but they can
gouge you on the "Handling".I order from Midway a lot.I just make sure
I have enough that the Shipping/Handling is not to far out of whack.
P.S.-For an extreme abuse of S/H go to Ebay.Oh they cleaned
it up a lot.People used to sell their products for .99 cents and
charge $139 S/H.To circumvent fees.

No, it's NOT "free shipping" they just hide the cost of shipping to you in their price. Trust me - you ARE paying for it!

USPS is the red because of a stupid law regarding pension funding

Maybe but doubt it - at least not while I was paying into their pension fund - (and of course there is the BIG DECREASE in mail volume which affected their costs) BUT....
USPS chose NOT to add an increased price or "fuel charge" onto their "fixed postage" a few years ago despite hugely increased fuel costs; FEDex and UPS DID and DOES change their price whenever they want to reflect higher fuel costs; the USPS is prohibited from doing that.

As I posted earlier, it was cheaper for me to ship/mail a small package via USPS this week that it was to go via UPS

But we're talking about MidWay - not LLBean/Nordstroms and their "free shipping" lol

I just stated the facts, not the conjecture.

Bayhawk....I totally agree. For those who don't think these companies are doing this, your blind and just keep ordering away:rolleyes:. Do you honestly think that these companies that are making multi-millions per year care about you? haha...funny stuff. The world is now a big business and people/companies will do nearly ANYTHING to make a profit. That is just the way the world turns. I'll tell you what, for those who don't believe...make a mock order on Midway for a single item.

Find it's weight, how much it costs to ship and add their famous "handling" fee ($3). Then message me back with the results...being that my wife owns her own online business and I have a certified postage scale, I will then calculate the cost of shipping and even double the "handling" fee...I BET you that I will still beat thier shipping costs, package it just as well or better AND get it there in the same time frame. Now that would be hard to debate:D.

Was just going to place an order with Midway until I saw the shipping charges. The item I was going to buy was the pearce grip for a 1911 for $9.99. I went to checkout and there was a $3 handling fee so I thought that was for shipping. It then asked me what kind of shipping I wanted and the cheapest option was $8.52. So I would be paying over $11 to ship a $10 item? Sorry, but that's insane. I ordered it from Brownells for the same price with $5 shipping. Anybody else run into this?
Hey HunterDad - isn't it GREAT that computers ALLOW US the ability to SHOP AROUND and MAKE CHOICES to save money when and where we can without leaving the house?

There's NOTHING wrong with making a post letting others know that you've found a way to save money and found a way to stop spending so MUCH money -

Thanks!!!

I think Hunterdad has every right to be irritated about the cost of shipping. Its insane. They charged me close to 10 buck S&H for a pair of scope mounts and rings. The stuff came to me in an envelope for cryin out loud. I ordered from them because I'd rather give my money to a company that's based here in Missouri, but next time its probably bass pro for me.

BassPro is yet ANOTHER Missouri based company!

Dang I love this place!

This thread is too childish to live.

Some of y'all need to lighten up, and some others of y'all need to realize that gripes are gonna be met with a response from those whose experience suggests that the gripe is inappropriate. If dealing with your fellow human beings in friendly dialog is too just hard a thing to accomplish, then I recommend not posting on an Internet forum.
