Was just going to place an order with Midway until I saw the shipping charges. The item I was going to buy was the pearce grip for a 1911 for $9.99. I went to checkout and there was a $3 handling fee so I thought that was for shipping. It then asked me what kind of shipping I wanted and the cheapest option was $8.52. So I would be paying over $11 to ship a $10 item? Sorry, but that's insane. I ordered it from Brownells for the same price with $5 shipping. Anybody else run into this?

All the time. And not just Midway.
I had ordered some stocks from Numerich and did not order the screw as I should have. Screw $3.25 + shipping $8.95.

Yes, that was their "small order" fee. Hey--Wednesday Night at the range has to get paid for somehow....LOL

some times big things cost just as much to ship as big things, if not more, thats why i wait to buy several things at the same time

Hunterdad:

I totally agree and because of those reasons I refuse to order anything from Midway. While they carry a ton of awesome stuff and their prices for the individual items are great, they totally rape you with shipping costs. Thats what companies are doing these days. They put a lower than average price on thier product to get your attention then make up what they marked it down to by charging you more for shipping. And I don't care what anyone says, a pair of grips or RCBS shell holders do NOT cost $10 to ship. I know this because my wife has her own online soap business and ships out large and heavy amounts of soap all the time. We have a postage scale at our house and sometimes the charge is so small, she doesn't even charge....and then on top of that a HANDLING FEE!? Yeah whatever Midway, bust the little guys. They claim it is because your placing a small order...which is cheaper and easier to ship....really? really? On the other hand I've had great sucess with Cabelas.com. I have ordered a ton of stuff through them including my RCBS Rock Chucker Kit which was heavy as all hell. Believe it or not, after talking to a nice rep on the phone they actually waived shipping all together. And they have done that a few times. And even when you are charged for shipping, it's not too bad and there's no "handling fee", no matter how small your order is. Okay, Im done with my ranting and raving....just makes me mad because people now are taking adavantage of the economy and how we want to save money...advertise low, get them to commit and then slam us with ridiculous shipping charges! Try Cabelas, you may have better luck there...or Ebay.

That's Midway's minimum order fee, which I believe is $40. Over $40 and their shipping is competitive. Brownells is much better for small stuff.

Larry Potterfield saves a ton of money by not paying models to do his advertizing...he insists on having that mug of his in all of the advertizements(web, television, and print)...he has no right to charge such a handling fee :)

I like Midway, but do not like their shipping charges. I often can find what I want with shipping that is much less or even free. I get lots of accessories from Optics Planet.

I hope you're joking.

I am always trying to pinch pennies, and the shipping charges are the worst, and I am sure they will get worse. Couple things I do are, wait to order until I need several things, and make sure the store has everything in stock.
Always check amazon first.
And for Midway, check this site.http://www.retailmenot.com/view/midwayusa.com
I have used it twice , but 50.00 minimum.

MidWay has shipping charges????

HOLY SMOKES - didn't know that!

I usually just go to the website, pick out what I need, call the 800 number, and drive the 2 miles to go pick it up an hour later!

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this is crazy. Its too bad really, they have a great selection but I won't be buying from them in the future with these insane shipping charges.

If you don't like Midway, buy somewhere else. If you do, by all means buy from them.

I would advise to look at the whole picture before condemning the place. They are not really interested in small orders over and over. If you insist on it, they get paid. No big deal. Buy enough to not have to pay the extra $3 for a small order. I keep a list of small things I need. I add them to orders.

They have a great selection and great pics with some good feedback on products. Shipping is fast. Website bites and is slow. Small orders can be expensive compared to other places. Larger orders can be very competitive on price. Sometimes they are cheaper by a couple of bucks and sometimes someone else is.

Shop around, make your decision, buy your stuff, but unless a place just outright wrongs you, complain about it somewhere else.

Headhunterdad? Did you think of that all by yourself? VERY funny!!!

And yes, I am a Government Employee, what does that have to do with anything?

I understand that Midway needs to up their prices when fuel etc. go up. I'm just curious as to how Brownells delivers me the same product for over $6 less, thats all.

Thank you for contributing to the thread.

Wow.... I was posting to see others response to this. I apologize if I ruffled your feathers. Are you in charge here? Just asking since you tell people what to do.

I am so sick of asking questions on boards and getting bashed for it. I see it all the time and its getting real old. People with high post counts think they can tell others what to do. Just because you have 20K posts doesnt mean that you can tell me what to do. All it means is that you spend more time sitting at your computer than I do.

Thanks for nothing...

I have never had an order from them for less than $40. When I order, I open two browser windows, one for Brownell's and one for Midway. I set up identical orders, and I push the button on whichever one is cheaper and has more of the items in stock. Brownell's hasn't won that contest in over two years. But I am glad they keep sending me catalogs. (I also round up a couple of dollars to the NRA trust fund.)

you can find midway coupons online to offset some of the shipping on large enough orders

Didn't even think of looking for a coupon. I guess I'll have to wait to make a big order in order for it to make it worth my while. Thanks for the tip.

I'm personally fond of midway, but know that their prices always aren't the cheapest.

The minimum order charge has two functions : 1. Forces you to buy $40 worth of stuff. ( Come on now....with this hobby and their selection you can find $40 in 40 seconds that you NEED not WANT) a very effective up-sell, or 2. Pay $3 for their handling of your sub-cost low-markup widget.

As a husband of a government wife, I fail to see the logic here as well, unless its something about government work and free...dunno.

Not sure about a lot of the other vendors, but if you've ever had an internet order go awry- you could be in far worse hands than midway. One such vendor who makes a green tumbler will never see a dime from me again over such an issue, regardless of price.

Pricing in and of itself is a value proposition, if there isn't a good value for you in your purchase, you may wish to re-evaluate ( pun intended) either your purchase or your vendor.

As a side note, midway does frequently offer "discounts" on a lot of their overmarked merchandise.... you can get some killer deals with great timing.

I needed a .035" hex head wrench for a sight adjustment. I couldn't find one locally so shopped online. 99 cents for the allen wrench and $11 for shipping.

Still need that damn allen wrench, but refused to spend $12 on a $1 item.

Seems to me that setting up some sort of pattern would make life easier. If I only need one or two small items, I'd rather buy locally if at all possible. Not just to support the local gunshop, but a "talk guns" shmoozing opportunity. Why pay any shipping you don't have to?

When there's cost savings and the shipping is a small percentage so the total is notably less than local retail, it makes sense to me to go online.

No big deal...

I usually buy small items from Palmetto State Armory, they are down the street from me.

Midway's customer service and fast shipping is worth the extra money to me.

I have stopped shopping for the cheapest sites. If Midway has it and PSA doesnt, that's where I get it from.
