Shock at Walmart

Great!
Lets see how many more full-service gun shops they can run out of business before they change their mind again!
Like they did here years ago!

I agree completly. I don't even look at the guns when I go in walmart. I figure if their is any savings it would not be engough to justify buying from them.

HOWEVER if my local walmart stocked reloading supplies I would be all over it. I have 5 gun shops in the county I live in. ONE has a few powders and mainstream bullets. I have to drive either 30 miles to sportsmanswhare house or bass pro to buy powders and primers (HAZMAT fees too high for online).

I support my LGS, but I guess there just is not engough business in reloading for them to justify stocking supplies.

I really wish my walmart would get int the reloading game. (they do sale handloader's magazine:p)

In the last couple of weeks I checked three (3) WalMarts in the Austin, TX area.

None of them sell guns any more, other than toys. :(

K-Mart = Quite often they would mess up the newspaper sale ads
+1

I got in an argument with the clerk and the manager she called over when I bought 5 boxes of Super-X .22 RF ammo years ago.

They gave me six bricks, and wouldn't listen when I told them that wasn't right!!
So I took the 5 bricks I paid less then 5 bucks for, and slinked off into the night!!

If my wife & I hadn't of been so broke at the time, I would have bought all of it they had!

Every WalMart I've ever been to either doesn't sell guns at all, or they do and have two cases - one for rifles, and one for shotguns. My local walmart falls in the two-case category. They do have a mini30, but not ARs. Aside from the 30, its just bolt action rifles and a few .22s.

If they did sell ARs, and even if they had a model I specifcally wanted for a good price, I still wouldn't buy it from them. I'd rather give my business to Sportsman's Warehouse where guns are concerned. WalMart's gun people have pissed me off one time too many. Just my two cents.

That really gets my goat! I live in one of the most gun free states, Arizona, and our Wally World doesn't have squat. They sell a few rilfe and shotguns but no AR's or reloading stuff. Those of you that live in the really liberal gun states are the one's with reloading supplies and AR's sold in the local Wally World. What's up with that? Anyone have some clue what political or marketing concept is at play here?

My city has 3 supercenters... The one I frequent started carrying a larger selection last week as well (bushmasters, mini 14, it was such a drastic change my GF even noticed.)

Ones selection has stayed the same, and one only carries ammo.

The one with the 'cool' guns is in the 'well off' part of town. The one with regular selection is in the 'normal' part of town. And lastly, the largest supercenter is in the poorest part of town, and only carries ammo.

I was checking out at the 'poor walmart' and noticed the assistant manager wa pulling cashier duty... So I says "Hey, why is it this particular wal-mart is the only one in town that doesn't carry any firearms?"

He answered, "population demographics." It could have just been his
Speculation though...

Sorry for the typos... Huge fingers, iPhone keypad.

@ Rikkaru : Since you aren't used to it, you might want a *touch* more info :D

Before you are completely amazed, most Walmart stores carry a similar (albeit smaller) assortment of sporting goods as other, more focused Sporting goods stores both local, and national chain stores.

. It's really a very common thing for that size retailer here, regardless of the Store name, and more retailers are jumping on the Gun-sales bandwagon today with the down economy cutting into store profits.

Here in the NW US we have a chain called "Fred Meyer" that operates on the same style of "some of everything you need for nearly everything" that Wally world perfected. (owned by Kroger, who operates across the country) In more "rural" areas, this has recently meant the return of Firearm sales after decades of lost sales from bowing to gun-phobes.

I keep waiting and hoping to see them start setting up the counters here in Portland

Just ouf of curiosity, to you guys who's walmarts sell AR-15s...

Where do you guys live? Like another Arizonan pointed out, I would expect a walmart in this state to sell them, if any american walmart does. But there isn't an AR to be seen in any Arizona walmart as far as I know.

3 Wally-Worlds in the area 2 with firearms, all have ammo and reloading supplies.

They all had guns at one time but one of them dropped guns a few years back. I'm thinking the "demographics" thing may be right since it's the one on the poorer largely Hispanic side of town that dropped guns.

No ARs that I've noticed but they've always had Mini-14s.

Fort Smith, AR

Again, only 1 of my wa-marts has them.

Having both worked in retail, and have a bachelor's degree in Marketing, I can tell you that this is one of 3 things.

1) Test Marketing: put it in a few stores, see the reaction, adjust the rest of the stores accordingly.
2) Demographic Selling: put it in high income, low crime stores. There is no reason to send a batch of perfectly good Bushmasters to an area where no one can afford them (makes for poor inventory turnover, something most store managers get judged on.)
3) Slow Relays: if Wally world has made the decision to put more guns in stores, they usually send out appropriate fixtures (those cool gun display cabinets) and specific instructions on how to do it to all the stores. What they don't send is extra payroll to pay employees to move entire departments around, so most store managers install the new fixtures and order/display new guns when they get the extra time/ money (could be a few months.)

Someone who WORKS at wal-mart could shed a little more light on the subject, but I'd be willing to bet the reasoning to put 'new fangled' guns in some stores, but not others falls into one of the above 3 categories.

Interesting, out Wal Mart use to sell guns years ago. Then they stopped. The Wal Mart in Concord sells guns and a boat load of gun, bow, more gun, hunting stuff.

My guess is that it's "political". Walmart is afraid to appear as though they support you "radical" Arizonians. :D

Anybody out there happen to know of any Wal-Marts in the northern Virginia area that are actually carrying firearms?

Last weekend's Wally World circular from the WaPo showed a bunch of rifles and shotguns, but I didn't know if this was just a generic ad for nationwide distribution...

Mine locally (two in JC, one each in Elizabethton and Unicoi) have a modest selection of long guns and a decent amount of ammo. For those of you who don't have any, consider your locale. Wal-Mart only cares about its bottom line and isn't going to sell firearms where the political climate is unfavorable, regulations are overly burdensome (the second often goes hand in hand with the first), or, most importantly, no one buys them anyway.

I don't know why so many people dis Wal Mart. I'd consider them an American marketing success story. They hire a lot of handicapped people that most wouldn't, they provide a lot of jobs, and they sell merchandise at prices a lot of people couldn't afford elsewhere. Yes, they do sell a lot of Chinese made products. Any of you guys have a non-US made item? They may have put some small mom and pop businesses out of business but on the plus side they employ a lot more people than the mom and pops did and believe me those mom and pop stores didn't pay much or provide much in the way of benefits either. If you don't like Wally World no one's dragging you there either.
All that being said, the one nearest me has a decent selection of rifles and shotguns. Lots of ammo and a good range of pistol ammo too. I buy lots of WWB ammo there for plinking and reloading. Most of the people who work the gun counter at our store are knowledgeable about the subject. Most are also shooters or hunters too.

We've got like 5 .22's of various flavors, an 870, a Mossberg 835 and 500 youth, and maybe another 870.

A few Blackhawk! hostlers, some crap Winchester cleaning supplies and parts, small selection of ammo, and some targets. There's also a small section of optics with one package of scope rings, a boresighter, and a laser that tapes to the gun.

Pathetic. They added a muzzleloading section a few months ago. It's lacking.

Don't know if this is a National chain but in the MidWest, Fleet Farm started selling ARs and handguns. I was pretty surprised to see that too.
