I have several guns that I like and I shoot them all without hesitation.

The only gun I would think of adding is a 1911, and I would enjoy getting a WWII government issue.

Is it realistic to think about getting a WWII 1911 and shooting several of boxes of ammo per year?

I would highly suggest finding one. A friend of mine let me shoot his and it was incredible. I need to get my act together and get one

Sure... I shoot my pre WWII NM 4-5 times a year. Well, not this year because I've been sick, but last year I'm sure I shot 3-400 rounds through it. It's still as tight as it was the day my dad gave it to me over 40 years ago. :D

Sitting in the safe is my late Dad's WWII 1911 service sidearm that he carried in Far East service. Once or twice a year I'll pull it out and expend a magazine or two and after a good cleaning it gets well oiled up, placed in a preservation bag, then it's back in the safe until the next time. Helps me re-connect in a spiritual sense with the man that I loved and admired so much.

I'll offer a different view - genuine WWII 1911s are pretty expensive now. You might spend a significant amount of money for even a worn gun. Also, they come with tiny sights and a tendency towards hammer-bites.

Plenty of modern-made 1911s are tighter, stronger, and are better shooters in every respect than the WWII guns.

Get what you like, of course, but if you want a gun you can shoot well and often, you might consider a more modern version.

Took these out a few weeks ago - all shoot just like they are supposed to.

The 1911A1 did well

They're not rare, but that doesn't mean they're cheap. The CMP when it was the DCM sold them for $17.50, and my neighbor has one in the original box with invoice to prove it. I saw one like it for $900 at a recent gun show.

I've got a commercial model made in 1919 I still shoot.

It's been re-blued sometime in its past, so I don't worry about 'collector' value.
