Shooting clays over water in Wisconsin

Can I legally shoot clays over water in Wisconsin?

I don't see why not- I spend a good part of the evening shooting burbon over water in Florida...

but seriuosly folks,

if you have a decent clear impact area, and a non obstructed view, it ought to be OK, barring local ordinances.

IANAL, of course.

Just be sure of what's on the other side of the lake. I've got an uncle who lost an eye due to a stray skipping pellet from across the lake.

Another variable is if it is lead shot over waters that are waterfowl wetlands.

I have only hunted/shot clays in the mountains, so that is not an issue here. Folks who live in wetlands oughta know.

lead in lakes

You may need to use non-toxic steel shot if you're shooting clay targets. The cost is going down now for clay target loads.

I understand there are some lakes in the midwest that also ban lead fishing weights. Also may have to use biodegradable clays.

One of our sporting clays ranges in Maryland had to shut down their water station targets because the shot noise exceeded 85 decibles in backyards that were 400 yards away. Neighbors also claimed in a lawsuit that Rockfish were eating the plastic wads (never proven).

I have shot over rice paddies with lead, over an old fish farm pond with lead (a few weeks ago) and other scenarios. Some have, by now, been halted; others it seems would depend on whether the water can be contained (like a pond), whether there are Federally controlled migratory birds, and on and on. Wisconsin F&G might be a good place to start - start low and locally and work your way up the Feds and the EPA
