During a vacation day yesterday I headed to my gun club's range for some R&R. There were four other guys, including a deputy sheriff in uniform (who one would assume would have knowledge of firearms safety), at the rifle range when I arrived. Immediately upon exiting my vehicle, I noticed that none were wearing eye protection per range rules and common sense. I also noticed that one of them walked downrange to patch targets without having told anyone what he was doing, and one of his buddies was still holding the rifle and aiming downrange with his finger on the trigger!!! :what:

That still small voice said "Run, run away as fast as you can!".

Instead, I set up my gear at my station, and waited for an opportunity to set up my targets. When that time came, I made sure that the line was truly cold. I set up my 50 yard targets, and proceeded to 100 yards to set up a couple more. On my way to 100 yards, the fellow that had walked downrange earlier was again coming back from 100 yards. As he passed me he said, in all sobriety and seriousness "We'll wait until you get back before we start shooting...OK?". :what:

At first, I thought he was joking. I later learned that he was not. I answered "Yeah, I'd appreciate that!" in a joking/sarcastic way.

Once I got back to my station, I finished setting up my station, loaded the M38 and chambered a round. Just as I was drawing a bead on target, I thought "Hmmm, I wonder where that idiot is?" and looked to my right. Sure enough, he was 20 yards downrange on his way back out. Keep in mind that the shooting had started back up since we had gotten back from downrange and 5 or so minutes had passed after the line was called "Hot" and acknowledged by all via voice and hand signals (after I had to get their attention in order to get acknowledgement...they all thought it was real funny that I was asking them to respond to me when I asked if the line was ready to shoot).

The idiots didn't know that people are supposed to stop shooting before someone walks downrange! :fire:

I got up, walked over to his buddies and told them that their friend is going to get himself shot. Then when Senor Butthead got back from downrange I told him that he nearly got himself killed and explained why. This was his reaction...

I explained the range rules they had violated, and why those rules exist. In retrospect, I should have said something earlier about the safety glasses, but I suppose I would have had to come back down there for the other violations later. I hated to treat these guys like I was their mother, but I'll be darned if I'm going to stand by and say nothing until someone gets hurt or killed.

So anyway, I went back to my station and did some shooting for about 90 minutes until...yep...dufuss did it again! He walked downrange without telling me he was going. Apparently he thought that only telling his buddies was sufficient. Once again, the fact that I habitually check the line before I shoot saved his sorry rear. :cuss:

That was it. I packed up my gear and went home. Next month's gun club meeting is going to hear my story.

Great post.

This is one of the reasons I shoot in the woods or in the desert, far away from these types.

I have a paranoia of catching some idiots accidental or stray bullet. :uhoh:

yeah well its 0 degrees out and i got talked into going shooting this afternoon. at least its guaranteed that we'll be the only idiots crazy enough to shoot when its this cold out.

there. i just admitted to being a wussy that cant take the cold. though i'd rather deal with the cold than duufesses that dont abide by safety rules.

one day there was another shooter who took an interest in my kimber, and asked if he could pick it up. the range was cold, and we were waiting for one last shooter to return. i said 'sure, just hold off until this guy gets back and we call the range hot'. he got offended and walked off. gee, sor-ryyy for trying to abide by range rules and common sense!

It seems like some folks just don't get it. I once left the range because a fellow shooter was letting both of his children (girl about 14, boy about 9) shoot unattended. He was on the far end of the range shooting a rifle or two. He had about 6 benches on the 50 yard range taken up with a couple of 22 rifles and various handguns. The kids went from bench to bench shooting whatever they wanted. I saw the girl pick up a pistol and proceed to shoot into the ground about 15 feet in front of her. When his son picked up a loaded pistol and walked behind me (I was seated at a bench) I left. I went straight to the clubhouse and complained. The really sorry thing is that there was a RO on duty at the time :banghead: .

As I was walking to the truck, 'dad' came down to check on his kids. He had the nerve to tell me if they gave me any trouble, 'just smack 'em'. I told him I wasn't there to babysit his kids. Fortunately, he now shoots elsewhere.

I have probably informed at least 50 people not to handle their weapons when people are downrange. 99% of the time I hear "it's not loaded". My standard reply is "accidents never happen with an empty weapon, if you aren't handling it, it can't go off." I've had a few get mad. Tough. :cuss:

Times like that I'd like to have my buddy's full auto blank gun.
That thing would scare the h3ll out of a person if they where downrange of it...

Not an assumption I'd ever make. Some of the most incompetent shooters I've ever seen on ranges were cops, including one who said, "Hey, don't worry about it, okay? I'm with the F.B.I." after I complained about his pointing his revolver at one and all.

I bet you wished you could... um... well sooner is better than later.

Not quite to the same extreme as your experience, people were handling guns while other were down range. I just turned around and left. I ran into a guy several years later that belonged to the club and he had no problem with it, but did have a problem with other clubs being "too safe", and this guy competed and has been to a number of ranges, so he isn't a stranger to range rules.

In 45 years of competition shooting I've seen three people shoot themselves or a buddy. fortunatly nothing life theatening. Two were deputy sheriffs and one a state highway patrolman.

One of the deputies shot himself in the butt!

You know, it is because of people like that - that I believe that if I am ever going to get shot, it will likely be at a gun range and it would be by some moron not being safe. It has only been at gun ranges where I have seen people handling guns that were pointed at me.

While I agree with the original post that the folks were morons, I have trouble with the notion that just because folks are stupid that they are not entitled to the 2nd Amendment rights. There is no IQ or knowledge requirement stipulated in the amendment.

Common sense just isn't very common, is it?

I don't know why people think that LEO's are experts in firearms. I think some of them think they are experts because they are LEO's.

It's the same reason I think I'm a sushi chef... because I just made some rice and bought some seaweed paper and a sushi roller. :banghead:

There is a range here in San Antonio that has no lane dividers just 30 target holders all lined up at the same distance.

If you want to shoot at 7 yards you walk up to the 7 yard mark and shoot.

Problem is: people shooting at 15 yards are behind you. :what:

I have complained to the staff and they see no problem with shooter 7 feet to my left pointing a gun at my back and having his bullets whiz past me.

Also no one callls cease fire. I've had people walk right in front of me while I was firing :cuss:

Needless to say I no longer go to that range.

I haven't heard of anyone being killed but there is literally not one thing on that range without a bullet hole in it.

ahhh bad range expierance's....I have several, but I was the cause of some of the problems so i wont go into them :neener:

One of the free ranges near my house (Uwharrie State Park) has a range that is entirely open...There are no standing targets...you bring your own..There are no lane markers...only thing ya got is a covered shooting bench...This is also the place that I decided that a "range gun" would come in handy...It is a pistol that I have no intentioins of shooting that day...I just carry it because of stupid people and illegals trying to boost your weapons on the line...

I remember the last time we went down there to shoot...Prolly 10 guys and gals altogether....and 5 kids of varying ages

Adults were safe...kids were not...There were just to many of them for the one guy to watch...

We called a "cease fire" and my buddy went down to check out targets...one of the kids picks up a .22 and starts to load it...I told him nicely "put it down and keep the action open"...he smirked at me...This did not please me...he started to reach for the bolt and chamber a round...Then I told him to "Put that f'n gun down or I would smash it on the ground and feed him what was left"!...He didnt smirk that time...This was the same kid, about 10 minutes before had almost shot his buddy in the back, messing around with an air rifle.. :fire:

Dude comes back and I told him what happned...I used harsh language...LOTS of harsh language...He took the kid out to the truck for some "one on one" quality father and son "bonding" time...Kid comes back and doesnt seem to pleased about the bonding time...Kid apologizes to me for his actions and I do the same for cussing at him...After that you couldnt have SHOEHORNED a weapon in that kids hands when there was a cease fire!...Heck I even let him shoot my .357 Ruger with light 38 target loads...Kid was a pretty good shot..

All good reasons why we should keep on showing others the right way to conduct themselves on the ranges. Maybe by being gentle about it, not overbearing, we might save one, and it will be passed on. I encounter many who leave a range, whenever someone else shows up. It's understandable why so many want to be alone, and not around morons.

Not that I'm a moron :neener:

Double-Naught

"While I agree with the original post that the folks were morons, I have trouble with the notion that just because folks are stupid that they are not entitled to the 2nd Amendment rights. There is no IQ or knowledge requirement stipulated in the amendment."

Where in my post did I stipulate that stupid people are not entitled to 2nd Amendment rights? Stupidity is not a disqualifier for the natural right of keeping and bearing arms. I didn't say that they should have their firearms confiscated or otherwise surrender their rights. I dealt with it by talking with them, then by leaving when it was clear that they were not going to change their behavior.

My post was about mixing shooting with stupidity, i.e. range safety. The 2nd Amendment doesn't document a natural right to act like an idiot with your firearms around other people, putting one's own and other's lives in danger.

If someone can present an argument that shooting IS for the stupid, then please post it while you still can.

but did have a problem with other clubs being "too safe"
I can just almost understand that. One experience at a public range will keep me from any outdoor public range for the rest of my life.

I walk out to the line, rifle in hand, during a ceasefire. I stop at the yellow line, and as I'm putting my rifle in the rack (I figured it might be inappropriate to lay it on the bench whilst everyone was downrange), I get bawled out by some jerk for handling a gun during a ceasefire. I point him to the rules posted about three feet from his bench, but this evidently doesn't work on him... he continues. I ignore him, go hang my target, wait until everybody is ready to go again, and start shooting.

So ten minutes later, after I've already decided that this is my last trip to this range, he comes over to apologize, but it's still my fault, he's just sorry for yelling. I told him to p-ss off. He got mad and stormed off. Found out, as I was leaving, that he teaches the safety class there.

...a deputy sheriff in uniform (who one would assume would have knowledge of firearms safety)...

Found out, as I was leaving, that he teaches the safety class there.

They're usually the ones who think they're the exception to the safety rules.

I walked into the range at Shooter's Paradise in Woodbridge, Va, last year and found myself looking straight down the muzzel of a Glock 9mm.

The instructor for that days CCW class was fooling around with one of his students, apparently showing him how to take a pistol away from an attacker by grabbing it with the right hand with the thumb behind the trigger. Both the instructor and the student were pulling on the pistol, which was pointed straight at the entry door as I walked out onto the range. Truely the blind leading the blind.

I haven't been back since.

If it wasn't that, there'd be the constant squabbling between the counter help to put me off. I don't want to deal with that crap in my free time.

Hazwaste,
I'm sorry to hear of your bad expereince at the range.

I just got back from a public indoor pistol range. The bozo two lanes down from me thought it would be fun put an exploding target out without telling anyone. When he actually managed to hit it, I thought that he had a KABOOM.

I packed my stuff and left. Time to pony up the dough for a private club now.
