Where do you prefer to do your sighting-in and load testing? Our local range is what I would call a public outdoor range. There are a few cement tables, a few chairs, a backstop, and not much else. You pretty much have to bring everything, including target stand.

It has one advantage, it is free to use.

When I lived in California I would go to a private outdoor range. It wasn't free, but it was fancy. You just needed to furnish a gun, ammo, and targets. Actually they had targets, ammo, and rental guns. So I guess all you really needed was some cash.

I have shot at indoor ranges several times. I do not like them at all. I feel claustrophobic in them.

I guess my preference for serious target shooting is a private outdoor range. I know there are fees and rules to follow. But their set up seems mre condusive to serious work.

So, where do you prefer to shoot for your serious stuff?

I belong to a private range with 24/7 access. Often times I am the only one there. I like that I can work on whatever I want without having to be concerned about what anyone else is doing.
 
I prefer private outdoor ranges, but have a public outdoor range 5 minutes from work so I generally go there.
 
I'd much rather shoot outdoors but the closest outdoor range is an hour's drive if there's no traffic. I don't get there that often. I also try to make it to one or two competitions each month, both at outdoor police ranges. I shoot weekly at a local indoor range and the only time it really bothers me is if I'm to the right of someone shooting higher caliber. Nothing like having a hot casing drop down your shirt. But I know everyone there so the social aspect is fun too and I'm always getting to try out someone's new toy.
 
I voted none of the above, I do all my shooting at my own range in the side yard. Don't have to worry about other people or permission to train the way I want to.
 
I like public/public can join ranges. Less rules to put up with, and
no range nazis who think they can just walk up and grab your guns
if you're not shooting their chosen caliber/standing on one foot/reciting
the Marine Rifle Prayer, or whatever the arbitrary rule du jour is.
 
Well, "prefer" to be on private land and self-responsible. I'd prefer that land be mine, but, until my finances get turned around, I will be at the mercy of the kindness of others.

Which means I tend to go to the open-to-the public outdoor range 20 miles out of town. I have a preference to that one for having better prices than the one only 12 miles out of town; and because I do not prefer indoor ranges in general, and the local one in town in specific.
 
I prefer the way I was introduced to shooting.. just going to an open and safe out-of-the-way place and shooting away. Where that was for me was in a area west of town, shooting across a sparsely-traveled dirt road into a berm on the other side.
Unfortunately, those places are now all but non-existent here.
 
I really dont enjoy shooting anywhere I pay to shoot. Hell, the one I pay to go to doesnt even have A/C.

Open land is nice.
 
Back "40" and nothing formal except to sight in. I don't hunt anymore and I tend to practice point shooting like I have for over 50yrs with different handguns. I have a couple of new ones that I plan to carry and they are my primary focus.
 
I have belonged to a private club for almost 20 years. 75 bucks a year doesn't hurt....When you live in the city you have to take what you can get....chris3
 
I use a indoor range I really like that I dont need to wait for the range to go cold to check or move my target,and it has bulletproof dividers.

also my outdoor range only allows 1 bullet at a time for rifles, you cannot load the magazine for any rifle. the outdoor range also doesnt allow anything faster then 1 shot every 15 seconds or double taps


my indoor range allows double taps and rapid fire

Backyard.

Now that it's so hot I can grab a gun and go out back, shoot a bit, then go back into the air conditioned shop or house.:)
 
I am fortunate to live out in the country, and have a pistol range in my back yard. I also belong to a really nice private range that is 10 miles from my house, and I do most of my practice there.
 
I PREFER private outdoor (with separated pistol bays - otherwise if I can't get a bay to myself then it's no better than public), and that's what I voted for, but the closest one to me takes me a bit over an hour to get there. It just isn't convenient for me.

Behind that I prefer indoor, mostly because they have the electric pulleys allowing you to change targets at your leisure.

The target change issue is why I put public outdoor at the end. At our public outdoor ranges, though they're free, you typically can only change out your targets ever 20-30 minutes. As someone who likes to change or tape their target after each magazine is fired, this is very, very frustrating.
 
too hot to shoot outside here in oklahoma too but i do it anyway :D (averaging about 110 degrees here lately)

We all shoot off this back road north of town that leads to a trail towards the riverbank. theres a hollow and past that is the riverbank. i shoot long range rifles on the riverbank, and i shoot handguns in the hollow (holler'). just at cans, beer bottles, cardboard silhouettes, etc
 
I shoot pistols at an indoor range most of the time. In my current location I do not have access to private property large enough to shoot on. I like the mechanical pulley targets and it allows me to change targets quickly and change the distance I am shooting easily.

I shoot rifle at public ranges. There is one 15 minutes or so from me. I used to shoot on family land 300+ acres but since my most recent move it is not as close as it used to be.

There is a local shooting club but it is 30 minutes away and the roads to it are not great so I have not joined. By the time I pay for the membership, pay for gas etc... it is cheaper to shoot at the indoor range.
