I shoot at a private indoor range only because I have not yet retired to my own land with a good berm that runs east-west with a northern facing. 
The indoor range is run by LEOs and vets, safety rules are in effect but are sensable.
The closest outdoor public range has rules that are fine if you're shooting blackpowder but are not helpful if you're not...
