I am trying to find out about the legal requirements for shooting on private property in unincorporated areas of California, but am having no luck. I suspect that this is a county issue, not state. I know I could call the local sheriff, but there is no guarantee that the person on the other end of the phone knows what he's talking about.

Anyone know of online references?

Tim

I would look up the county ordinances of your county. They can usually be found on the county website. (if there is one)

In most rural counties there doesn't seem to be a problem as long as there is enough space on the land.

Your county code should regulate shooting. Look at the codes yourself instead of relying on talking to someone that works for the county.

Library. County Codes. There are several overlapping sets of laws -
You'll want to read the CA Fish & Game code as well, and be aware of any BLM and Fed land issues as well.
Then call the County Sheriff with your questions.
