A shooting occurred on the University of Texas campus just this morning. Very little detail has been released thus far. One shooter took his own life but police think there may be a second. 8 to 10 shots allegedly fired.

Seems like nation wide there has been a more than normal amount of fire arm related goings on these last couple of months.

Wish BGs would use baseball bats or something so the haters could go after baseball or something!

yeah I just heard about this - seems the only person hurt was the gunman - good to hear. Hopefully there isn't a second shooter running around that might change that.

Hmm... I am currently sitting on UT Arlington's campus viewing this website.

Strange.

And I like the baseball idea. ^^

Edit: and there is a possum wondering around about 5 feet from me in a flower bed... have to watch my back now.

Yep. Not sure whats going on but apparently no one hurt, campus locked down. Rather odd situation though.. but hey, just glad everyone's ok!

Timing

Local radio just had an interview with Professor John Lott. He's scheduled to give a talk at UT ( University of Texas Austin ) tonight. Subject is concealed carry on campus.

Wonder if it'll go on as scheduled?

quote from press conference broadcast on KXAN, "it appears to be a AK-47"
"7.62" has been mentioned several times in the last few minutes.
Likely it is a civilian version, but I don't suppose law-enforcement officials are trained to readily identify the difference between a full-auto and semi-auto AK-47 style rifle.

Initial report from a professor who was allegedly 'shot at' included a description of the firearm as an 'assault rifle'.

No shots fired by law enforcement, shooter was allegedly chased into the library by LEOs.

Tenative information:
three shots fired outside
four shots fired inside
Shooter was a student
No second suspect involved, although it was otherwise stated in the press conference.

We seem to be having issues with folk trying to turn THR into some form of news outlet for anything tangentially involving a gun, and that simply fails to support the mission statement of THR:
Quote:
It is the declared mission of this board to achieve and provide the highest quality of firearms discussion on the Internet

Just because a news story has a gun associated with it does NOT make it suitable for discussion on THR. News stories are suitable for discussion here only when the story contains clear and unambiguous self-defense, home defense, firearms-centric, or RKBA aspects *and* when there is readily discernible detail in the news accounts sufficient to support a rational discussion.

If the news story does not fall within those qualifiers, please don't post it. If you are unsure of the appropriateness of the story for discussion here, then please PM a moderator and ask.

Yup. Until and unless there arises a 2nd Amendment/RKBA issue from this, this incident will remain another regrettable tale of bad people doing bad things.

Just because they used a gun doesn't make it a THR.org story.

We're about responsible firearms ownership and gun rights. Attempted mass murder (or whatever this really was) doesn't fit into that scope.

If there are compelling 2nd A. questions which arise from this, PM a Mod and we'll consider opening the topic again.
