So out shooting with the AR-15 with a bipod prone. This is fine and dandy. But how on earth can I aim the weapon upwards a good amount? Is there a technique for this....or is that only for crouching/standing? The stock slips off my shoulder long before I've maxed out my upwards aiming. I think the bipod is 6-9" btw.

Thanks.

how upwards to you want to aim?

you do have to realize that while prone, your stability increases tremendously, but it comes at the price of limited range of motion.

if the stock is slipping, try putting some hockey/friction tape on the butstock to give it some more grip.

It reaches a point where I'm aiming up so much that the stock is going down below where my shoulder is. I can still see through the sights (especially with red dot) but I won't fire the gun because the stock isn't resting against my shoulder. I understand prone has way less movement. But am just wondering if there's a technique to fix this so I can aim up at least a little bit.

short of buying a new stock with and adjustable buttplate........or buying an adjustable length bipod......im not sure there is much you can do.

have you looked into using a sling instead of a bipod?

i wouldn't worry too much about the stock on your shoulder. it's not optimal, but you should still get a hit.

i don't shoot "up" much, but i do occasionally find myself laying on a downward slope trying to shoot from one hillside to another. i think that's pretty much the same thing.

try moving out from behind the gun to laying as much as perpendicular to the rifle. like cameron said, you lose a lot of other things, like ability to manage recoil etc. but if it's the shot you've got... sometimes you have to make do.

btw, if you have other items handy, make your own support. e.g. a backpack, roll up your coat, whatever

You have to install one of those shoulder thingies that go up....
Wow, that actually would work here. Someone get to work on a hinged buffer tube! :p

I run a 9-13" Harris because of that exact reason. The shorter one is really only any good for bench shooting unless you are a midget.

At some angle of uphill shooting, you will just hit the limits of the prone position for your body. Open legged sitting or kneeling are both pretty good for shooting uphill.

Use a sling and choke way up on the hand guard.

Tripods are neat, but they can be limiting once you get away from a comfy bench or level range.

You can also put the tripod on a pack or something.

Be aware that shooting uphill prone with a rifle that has recoil is a sure recipe for a bad case of scope eye.

Due to the AR's already long magazine (I typically run 30rnd mags) I've used the 9-13" expandable bipod more effectivly for Prone and field use than the 6-9" bench rest model. The 6-9" was perfect for my Long Range 308 bolt gun though.

For shooting uphill, there is a variation of the kneeling position where you put your ass on the ground instead of sitting on your trigger side foot like usual. Shooting sticks are also good for that purpose.
